Very moody, Tiffany. Nice composition. There are a zillion ways to light the subject; the way you've done it is unusual but works for me. If I had to say something, the picture could be a bit sharper.

Thanks Michael. I was asked to do some images for a composite band shot, so I did a lot of balanced light...but you know me...don't even say I can't side light. I went extreme here just to see and I kinda liked it. I hope that the unsharpness that you are seeing is just the bg. I blurred it because my bg was showing wrinkles (just like the rest of us). I've been using that 3 step sharpening that was posted here on PN, so does the guitarist look soft? Or just the bg?

Well, Tiffany, I might be influenced by traditional photography so the extreme lighting here appears to better suit the expectation of a sharp but grainy image.

To me, the background blur seems a bit too smooth for what one might expect to see from DoF, and the subject appears less distinct as a consequence. Then there's a slight halo presumably from the difficulty in selection which gives it an artificial look.

The tip of the guitar's coincidental flaring with the bright swirl of the background looks a bit odd and draws attention.

Hope my feedback isn't too critical and I do like the composition. :-)

Not too critical at all...this is one of those ones that I figured I would like, but prolly no one else. One of the interesting things I found about this, was that the lighter bg that surrounds the guitar is actually how it looked...no ps. Like I said, I just smoothed the wrinkles. For me, the smoothness added to "dreamy". I can see little areas that look like they need touchup around his shoulder, but not much else. I've heard that your canadian monitors are notorious for showing halos (>8.

and does that mean that when I get my canadian papers, that I will have to re-photoshop ALL my pix to fit canadian standards?

Never mind Photoshop, hurry up with the papers! You'd still be the same distance away but at least we'll be in the same country, eh? :-)

Unfortunately, we are prolly not moving there for awhile...but who knows...I am pushing for a trip to Tofino to get those "Oh Canada" songs a singing.
