John,

Léonne is a beautiful girl. Her make-up is very well done (a little eyeliner under her eyes would not be inappropriate -- it would be consistent with her evening make-up). Her fingernails are very nice. I love the specular highlights on her lips. The background is nicely neutral. She has very good eye contact with the camera (viewer). Her expression is somewhat sensual.

My eyes are not as good as they used to be, but your depth of field appears to be so narrow that her eyelashes look sharper than her eyes. Her eyes should be in critical focus. The back of her head is certainly out of focus. I don't see a good reason to have any of her out of focus. An out of focus background is very nice and focuses attention on your subject. Parts of your subject out of focus will draw attention away from what is in focus. It is difficult to go wrong with having the entire subject in focus.

What was once thought to be unique or “cutting-edge” portraiture is now so common as to be considered trite by many. Think how often you see tilted (shot at an angle or later tilted) subjects or recognizable use of HDR. The more photographers try to be different, the more they become the same. Some photographers want their images to be unique -- to be different from what other photographers shoot. They try to move away from conventional composition and design elements. The elements of design or composition can influence how we perceive the picture. They have a predictable affect on viewers. The further you move away from the conventional, the further you move away from what is known to work. We get the term “compositional rule” in photography because it is a design element that has been shown to consistently work. In other words -- don't tilt your portrait or subject.

Once you straighten the picture, or Léonne, I would do something about the top crop. Cropping that much into the head implies you are going to do a tight crop on the bottom. You will want to give her some head room.

Her skin tone is very good where the fill light is, but she is burned out where the rim lights are hitting her. I'm really not a fan of using rim lights that are that dominant. It almost appears they are your main lights. It draws attention to the lighting instead of the girl. This may be just one of my many idiosyncrasies, but I think a narrow rim light (not this hot) works better.

I would like to see a little more light in her eyes. They look a little dark to me. Her pupils are quite dilated. If you use brighter modeling lights or have a brighter area to shoot her in, her eyes will not become so dilated.

The posing of her hands really looks very good. You have posed them showing their sides (edges) rather than the flat sides (tops or palms of her hands). Your way is slimming, feminine and graceful looking. The positioning of the fingers. on both hands, on either side of her face seems a little awkward to me. I'm not sure it looks very natural. I won't say it looks posed, because I can't imagine anyone posing a person this way on purpose. Maybe she just has a bad case of the itchies? I don't think you can do a Vulcan mind meld on yourself.

You might want to do some minor retouching on her face.

Nice shot,

Mark
