Convict Lake II

tom grubbe

Shot of Convict Lake about 20 miles south of Lee Vining, CA. I used a Singh-Ray 2-stop ND Grad (very subtle) although I'm not so sure it was necessary. I had to crop out the right and left sides since the edges of the cokin holder crept into the frame at this 24mm view. I have since hacked off the two outer slots.I also tried warming this up a bit in PS since the slide is very blue (I shot others with an 81B)...

A good image. I agree with the height comments of the previous post. Also, maybe a slight crop off the bottom (to loose the larger flat rock) - although that is really a matter of personal taste.

I like the idea about a fresh coat of snow, and Im sure this lake freezes over. Id say a great picture of this lake would be a bright blue sky, a fresh coat of powder on the rocks, hills and mountains and a halfway iced over lake. I think a panorama might add to the drama, but then again your skill at composition wouldnt make that a necisity.

While the light and tone makes this a good shot, IMO it would be even better with a little more breathing room on top & bottom. I would have backed up a tad or zoomed out a bit.
