There was something about this big brute of an animal being in this

relaxed and demure pose that I found appealing. I know it's quite a

bright light, but I think it shows off the texture of his skin.

Please let me know what you think.

I agree with your assessment of your composition. What a beautiful animal! I might be tempted to crop down from the top to remove that bit of a pole (probably easier to clone it out, now that I think about it). What about a crop from the right side, a bit closer to his horn? Just to keep the emphasis purely on the rhino... Well done; and I love your processing. Cheers! Chris

Christal... I think the decision to go with b/w was correct. You've tamed a lot of the extra light and the textures look great... well done... Mike

What strikes me the most, other than your good composition is the B&W conversion. The myriad of tones displayed in the skin make it very life like. Christal your processing skills are very evident in this image and a sign of your diligence in becoming a good photographer. Well done. I also confer with Chris's assessments.

Wow....3 of the photographers I respect most all commenting on this! What can be better than that? Truth be told though.....I still don't know what I'm doing half of the time, but I get lucky from time to time. And Chris, I had thought of both of your crop ideas, then decided against them. But I may revisit the idea now that you've mentioned it....at least the pole at the top. Thanks guys! Always good to hear from you!

Yes indeed this is a very good b/w rendition of this Rhino. The light seperates him from the backgound wonderfully showing all his wrinkled up skin.....Regards... PS I trust you received my email yesterday about verticals........?

Hello Christal, I find the composition well done and the crop ok as is and the tones well done.

Just to control the strong light on the skin would be to reduce a tad the contrast.

But other then that, I think that you succeeded with this image and your emotion is well represented.

All the best!

In this case the strong light and harsh shadow make a very powerful composition. In my opinion, black and white, (and monochrome), photography is all about CONTRAST! and you really nailed it with this shot. Merry Christmas and happy Holidays to you and yours,Jim.

Excellent B&W work Christal! Love the textures that harsh side lighting amplified for you. I'm with Chris on getting rid of the pole, but I'd skip the crop I think. Great shot.

All the best,

Neil

Hi Christal!

This really appeals to me. With high contrast B&W you created a powerful, dramatic image. The extreme contrast makes me hone right in on your subject and all the interesting subtle tones of blacks, grays and white in the skin. I love the textures. The lines that define the sagging bags under his eyes draw my eye down to his snout and mouth in the dirt. I can feel his fatigue. This is what I love about B&W, when it is done well you get an emotional reaction.

Best wishes,

Linda
