Maple Cross Section

LenMarriott

A century old (lost count at 105 rings) maple tree cross section. (54" across) Tree felled due to threat to hydro transmission lines. Canon A540 P&S. Slight tweaking in PS. Anyone need some firewood? Best, LM.

Good to hear from you again. Long time, no see. I took many versions of this tree stump but this is my favourite. Best, LM.

Good to hear from you again. 'Found' shots are a large part of my portfolio. Some die an early death but many make it to 'keeper' stage. I believe this is one of the latter category. I might just end up printing it. Best, LM.

Quite extraordinary wood-art :-) Well seen, and captured. In B&W, the mystery factor could be intensified further, color gives a small hint to decode the image. Very good, holds my interest for a while

Good of you to take the time to view & comment. I tried this one in B&W but to me the coloured parts look 'dirty' when converted so I left it in colour. I agree it's unusual appearance tends to hold one's attention for a while until the mind figures out what it really is. Best, LM.

I join the line, very Interesting wood cut, it is known that every round ring in a tree is a year of its life( as far as I know) so this looks quite an aged one. I wonder what is the significance of the dark line that devides it to two parts?is it natural or man's doing? In any event it is very unusual and well observed.Great texture.

I believe the center part (dark line) is where a split in the tree begins. It's probably why it was worrisome to the power transmission company and ultimately why it was proactively cut down; to prevent it damaging the power lines if it came down in a windstorm. Thanks for your interest & thoughts on this one. Best, LM.

This is super. Makes me want to see the rest of the tree. That's great color. Probably would've made a pretty nice piece of furniture.

Good to hear from you again. The rest of the tree is no longer pretty except for this type of shot. I was thinking at the time I was looking at the pieces laying on the ground that some of the larger slices would indeed make some interesting, if rustic, furniture; coffee tables for the cottage at least. As of now I think they are all slated to go into someone's fireplace. Best, LM.

Thanks for digging deep for this oldie.  This was an old maple cut down to reduce the hazard to a nearby power line.  Thought it worth recording.  Best, LM.
