...i know that i supose to say a critique here[or a positive comment]......but i am going to tell you what i felt first time when i saw this picture: i slowly smiled and said to myself in my mind > God...i wish i was like him[the father from the photo]

Melissa...the photo is great....although i must admit i envy him[in a good way sense] for having such a beautiful wife and kids.

A great family portrait but it needs a tighter crop and much less depth of field. There is way too much of the stairs in the image, it competes with the family for your attention, especially since they are lighter right behind the father and mother's head. Plus you have some sharp stair edges cutting across people's heads. Also, a little edge burning, draws the eyes more into the center and focuses on the family. A shot like this cries out for a 180mm f/2.8 (in 35mm) lens and maybe an aperture of f/5.6.

Just some suggestions............

Melissa, My first reaction was the same as Scott's. It needs a tighter crop. The stairs acts as a border and in my view is too heavy and busy. I like Scotts' tighter crop. With the tighter crop, I'm not troubled by the DOF. With the tighter crop, it's a fabulous family image! Wonderful balance and expressions. David
