October Skies over Chocorua

harrylichtman

Storm clouds at sunset can be either exception lighting or too much of a good thing. Foliage around NH's Mount Chocorua was peaking as I was heading to what I thought were "greener pastures" farther north. I waited out this sunset and was glad I did. For this composition, I included lots of sky by zooming in and stitching 2 vertical images. I would have had to crop considerably a single shot to iclude the full sky. While I do think this crop might be a little too much sky, I decided it was easier to crop after the fact than wish I included more.

I used 2 vertical images to includde lots of sky in this image. A single

wide angle image would have required cropping a bit of extraneous

elements from both sides. I'd be interested to know if there is too much

sky, as the peak and horizon nearly centerd. Your thoughts welcome.

I had a dislike for a time for square crops...then I grew up. :)

There is no part of this image I could bear to crop. The foreground provides context, the light clouds at the top a nice tonal balance, and the mountain shape and vibrant trees are pleasing as is. Well done!

I can see why you would be wrestling with this one. That sky is positively biblical. I couldn't bear to crop it, and I would have difficulty working out where to crop from below with those two red sentinels on the sides. My take is to see it as three layers, and leave it alone. It does look a little oversharpened in the distant hills, though.

Thanks Steve and Jeff - I will post some single images from the evening, but as you can see most of the sky color was too high in the clouds and difficult to tie in with the rest of the image. Jeff - Biblical is a great word to describe it- I sometimes think of the skies in Ghostbusters at these moments. It makes you realay feel the power of nature to produce great skies and colors. I may have sharpened the image uniformly for upload-the mnt. does look a bit too sharp-I'll modify that.

Thanks for both your input - Harry

I like square crop with this one, because of the central symmetry of the motif.

Fine image with excellent control over the dynamic range.

Wonderful image, I wouldn't crop anything. I don't think it's possible to have too much of a sky like this.
