this is a really sweet shot, it shows a really nice bit of interaction between them and it creates a feeling of a fun pair of siblings enjoying each others company, all parents love to see that no matter how posed it is in some cases and totally un-natural for the kids :)

 

You have nice lighting and tones going on all I would say is don't be shy with the contrast and push it up a little more to bring out the highlights and shadows.

 

With the crop personally I would crop lower on the heads as I show in the my thoughts sample (hope you don't mind that)

When they(our grandchildren) visit I walk around with my camera attached to me!

There is so much imagination and pure bliss with life hanging around them that I can't help but capture one or twenty good shots! I really appreciate all the words of wisdom and the kind comments.

Iain, thanks for the tips. I do adjust the contrast, as well as other things but I worry about the compression the photo goes through on the upload and worry that too much contrast will create "noise" in the photo. Is that true?

I am not sure if colour and contrast is overly effected through compression what tends to stand out more is if a picture is sharpened and it gets compressed further on an upload then the sharpening can look even harsher.

 

This site doesn't seem to compress jpg's on upload though so I wouldn't worry, what tends to happen more with the web is people beleive what they see as what is there and that just is not always the case, each monitor is set up differently and the same picture could change drastically between a range of monitors in contrast, colours, sharpness and size.

 

What I would suggest is if someone critiques your work and says the contrast is dull or the colours seem harsh or whatever is you go to their portfolio download and print one of their photos, then you will see how they see their own photos and see how that compares to how you see it on your monitor it could well be just down to their own monitor settings and not your work so don't worry to much about the comments.

 

Monitor caliberation is almost as important as cleaning your lenses.

 

On my screen your photos doesn't look to bad at all it was just with one being blonde and the other darker the mid tones can get a bit lost and punching up the contrast pops out the faces a bit.

 

You have two really sweet looking grand kids there and a good eye for a nice photo, keep it up and enjoy your creations, if you like it thats far more important than any critiques you will get here.

Besides the fact that the kids are really cute, their expressions, one shyly smiling, the other's expressive eye positioning, capture emotion & personality. That's what it's all about with kids :) Nice job.
