View from Mt. Tremblant

sammm

I was shooting birds near the summit when a rainbow appeared in the valley below. This is the first photo I've submitted - I'd appreciate comments on composition, exposure, etc.

For someone that is so critical of other's work, I thought that, when looking at your portfolio, I would discover a richness which portrays the deep experience on which you draw. Frankly, I find this photo just a cliché of what has been done a thousand times before and therefore of very little interest. Don't you have anything more original to show us?

I've actually only commented on three other pictures, generally positively, all very recently. (I've rated others, but generally before this summers' "grade inflation" hit). In each case where I commented, I only commented when I thought I had something substantive that would be helpful to the photographer. Which of my comments didn't you like? If any led you to believe I had a "deep experience", please know I'm a confessed beginner.

I will not make great claims to originality for the above, but would have an interest in substantive criticism of what perhaps I should have done differently to make it a better photo of, yes, a rainbow. Why did I post it? I rather like the depth of it, the way the rainbow shows up behind the stand of trees in the middle foreground and in front of the mountains in the back; I also like the highlight toward the lower left hand side contrasted with the darker trees above it. I'm not really happy, however, with the contrast and color of the mountains in the rear and of the sky, and with the darkness of the close foreground where the reddish flowers and grasses are.

And I will post others occassionally, now and then, to develop the portfolio; I hope you will as well. Some of them may be more original, some may just be attempts to learn from something I've taken, can't quite figure out, and would like some input on.

My first criticism is that it is too small. Landscapes, especially, deserve to be seen LARGE. It doesn't look sharp, but I like the colors and composition very much. . . . better than most similar shots on photo.net . . . but then one image does not a portfolio make.

I've now uploaded an image as large as possible given Photo.net file size guidelines and maintaining reasonable image quality - still some significant quality issues - it's much sharper in the original.

You could use the "save for web" option in photoshop to control the size of the image you want to upload. I usually resize to about 700x500 (including frame) and save about 100-120k. If the file is too big it will not be deleted but compressed by the photo.net software, and usually looks fine.

You can try to unsharp mask after resizing the picture as well.

Maybe you don't have or use photoshop, but probably the program you are using has got some similar features.

I REALLY like this Image! Yes it may lack the punch of being wall to wall or emphasized in photoshop but I should be so fortunate as to have my camera on me at a beautiful moment like this. I hope you took the time to sit down and soak it all in...;)...J

As a matter of fact, I have been to this spot many times, and have had the pleasure of seeing another very similar rainbow in almost the same place on another occasion. Quite beautiful, and about the only place I've gotten to be "somewhere over the rainbow".
