I think this shot can be improved by cropping off the white patch of sky. When this is cropped off, it allows me to look into the image more and I then realize that there is another boat coming through. Dodging the house and burning the boat in the foreground may help balance this shot out as well. Otherwise a nice composition and setting.

Thanks Tim and Nanette. I agree the bright and boring sky doesn't do much for the image. I have already cropped some of it out, but wanted some space between the building and the top border. I did also make some feeble attempt at dodging the house. With the reflective sandstone and the orientation, this location is usually difficult to expose well. Thanks for your interest.

Hanna, I wouldn't even have noticed the sky if you had not mentioned it. That soft sky is responsible for that great lighting. Nice work--again.

Lannie, you're always such a great support and i think we see things from a similar perspective.

Henri, here's one especially for you.

I like both versions, but I think I prefer the original. The soft light of the sky adds to the overall tones of the image, and then the red on the boat stands out even more...Nice work!

Depends what you want to emphasize. This is fine to show the lush surroundings, but the second boat gets lost. You could easily crop the top as shown, a bit more than that off the bottom, and even more off the right to keep the aspect ratio intact.

Both work; it's just a matter of emphasis.

I don't really like the cropped version because it distorts my personal feeling about the place. I also don't like the proximity of the water (psychological I'm sure). For me, the crop brings the large boat into closer view, distracting me from the distant one. In the original the long stretch of vegetation leads me to the boat under the bridge. So, we all have a different perspective, and that's good.

Thankyou all for your helpful contributions.

great travel photography, Hanna. This one I agree with you on; I like how the composition is framed by the greenery. Leave as is.

well done on a few of these, actually! It's more difficult to be a tourist while trying not to make your photos look like "tourist" pics, isn't it? ;o) ...

You're doing a fine job, Hanna... these are great compositions.

Jack, thanks for your viewpoint. I lived in or near Bath for many years so I hope I don't come across too touristy. But the canal is always a great attraction for me so I return at different times of the day and in different seasons to come up with new angles. I'm pleased you enjoyed them.

I like your composition very much and like both versions but prefer the saturation level of the original. The reflections are beautiful in the still water. I would've played up the saturation on the chateau just a wee bit. Great shot!

Ah yes, the 'chateau'. Actually it is a fairly small and ordinary (in Georgian terms)bridge house. This Bath stone is always difficult to reproduce with much colour. I did reduce the contrast a little for the cropped version and I agree that with that and the reduced greenery, it just doesn't have as much punch. Thanks for stopping to look Kim.

I vote for the crop, and I'd burn the house a bit, while leaving everything else untouched. Hanna, nice composition. What really makes it work for me is the combination of the lovely reflection in the foreground with the perspective and the boat in the distance. My eye moves from one back to the other again and again. Many of my favorite images have this sort of complexity, as if it were two photos in one.
