GoPro HERO3 and the Search for Monomoy Wildlife
When the opportunity presented itself to conduct a field test of the GoPro HERO3 Black Edition, we jumped at the chance and we knew exactly what we were going to do…test it trying to get footage of a Great White shark attacking a seal decoy.
As luck would have it, Photo.net resides not far from Cape Cod and Monomoy Island, where white sharks have been seen in much higher frequency in recent years due to the fact that thousands of grey seals call Monomoy Island home much of the year. Ocearch, a non-profit organization, “with a global reach for unprecedented research on the ocean’s giants,” had been just off Monomoy Island during the month of August tagging sharks and conducting amazing research. One of their primary goals in their research is getting a clearer understanding as to where these sharks travel. We had been watching the Ocearch website for weeks, which displays the location of the last transmission of the tagged sharks and tracks where they have been. We headed out once we had a good combination of a decent weather forecast and recent locations on Katharine, a 14 foot, 2300 pound female last known location was off the southern tip of Monomoy in Nantucket Sound.
Our first view of Monomoy showed thousands of grey seals sunning themselves on the beach and poking their heads in and out of the surf. We got the camera ready and into the water, towing it 60 feet behind our boat in our homemade GoPro trolling housing while running parallel to the beach. Soon thereafter, we put the seal decoy in the water hoping to get some of the seals interested in what we were doing. We were full of questions like:
- Would the seals be interested in what we were towing behind the boat underwater?
- How many other white sharks were in the area that Ocearch hadn’t tagged yet?
- Would we get what we had set out for—which was capturing a shark attack on a seal decoy?
- Would the GoPro hold up to an attack!?
We may not have gotten footage of Katharine or her fellow sharks yet, but take a look at the interesting creatures we did capture on the GoPro HERO3 Black Edition.
