Fujifilm XT3 – preview

The Fujifilm X-T3 is a high-end mirrorless camera with a 26 Megapixel APSC-sized sensor shoots 4k video at 60p has embedded phase-detect autofocus, a large detailed electronic viewfinder and tilting touchscreen packed into their traditional retro-styled body. The X-T3 release reveals the new Fujifilm’s X-Trans IV sensor and X-Processor IV image processor.  Of course the X-T3 has higher resolution than the previous generation X-T2 and continues to deliver superior autofocus, burst shooting and movie capabilities.

At first glance

The X-T3 shares much the same classic styling as the earlier X-T2, while adopting the hefty dials and buttons of the XH1.  The viewfinder resolution is 3.69 Million dots with 0.75x magnification, while the screen retains the dated dual hinge system but gains touch-sensitivity.  The faster sensor readout now impressively supports 4k at up to 60p, even more impressively with 10 bit recording at 60p now available internally direct to the SD card. It also supports burst shooting up to 30fps using an electronic shutter and a minor 1.25x crop, although the body can now capture at 11fps using the mechanical shutter and full frame again without the need for the optional grip.
If using the FujiFilm X-T3 primarily for photography we like:
  • Classic styling
  • Can customize menus it to make it yours
  • New image processor – X-Processor IV
  • New sensor – X-Trans IV sensor
  • Comparable to many professional cameras.
  • Largest line of native APS lenses to use with this
If using the FujiFilm X-T3 primarily for video we like:

  • 4K 60p internal allowing for slow motion 120 Frame per second
  • Color Profiles along with internal F-log
  • Video AF – using face detect AF
  • Manual Focus
  • While rolling in 4k
  • Zebras – live histogram while shooting with focus peeking

What do we dislike about the FujiFilm X-T3:

  • Battery Life gives under and hour while shooting video.
  • Tilt screen is limiting.  A full flip screen would be a nice improvement.
  • No built in image stabilization, so it will live on a monopod or gimbal or tripod.
