Would like to hear something about the size of such a natural fomation - a gingantic geode...?

The origins are volcanic... This is called "Red Crater" and can be found in Tongariro National Park on the Tongariro Crossing. It is a hell of a hike to get to this point, but well worth it.

 

PS note Mt. Ruapehu in the background? That was "Mount Doom" from Lord of the Rings.

Amazing place and viewpoint ! This is really quite something... If anything was manipulated in PS, could you perhaps tell us very specifically what it was ? Thanks.

 

I like the photo very much, but I still have one little regret: I guess the colors and apparent areas of burning on the volcano at the back bother me somehow. And it seems to me, this really is the case, where I'd find it appropriate to darken the top of the image overall, or better, to use an ND grad on the top when shooting.

Truly unique image and never have seen a photo of this spot anywhere else. Tend to agree with Marc G, that the area inside of the cave is too dark and tends to really flatten out the image.

Careful what you agree with...:-) I think you misunderstood my post... I never said I find it too dark inside this hole... Just to clarify.... Cheers.

Amazing image! Did you always see this place in this particular way? Or did it suddenly, er, come to you in a flash? In either case, it takes a creative eye to see a huge, looming landscape on a human scale. Regards, J
