I was driving south on Highway 287 yesterday between Laramie, Wyoming and Fort Collins, Colorado when I saw these guys on standing on the side of the road. I pulled over and took this out the window almost before I got stopped. There were no retakes. This was the first of three shots I got off before they went over the hill. The big female was starting to run just as I snapped the shutter on this.

Pronghorn Antelope are the second fastest land animal on earth. The Cheetah is faster, but not by much. These guys have been clocked at 70 MPH (112 KPH). They spook easy and are very hard to get up close and personal with.

Nice shot of opportunity. Congratulations! I'm thinking the background is distracting - leads me away from the subjects. I wonder if you cropped it down to just ground level, even if you cut off the head of one - to make it a grouping of three.

I disagree about the crop. The background as it is gives this picture really nice depth. It also helps emphasize the rugged terrain. Nice shot, Larry. All the best.

Great Capture Larry. You were lucky to have one looking at you before they ran. They are really shy. I like the background also. It shows their environment.

Thank you George. Thank you Jamie. Thank you Jeri. I appreciate each of you taking the time to look at and to comment on this photo.

I think I got pretty lucky with this shot. I like that big boulder on the left so I am probably going to live with it the way it is. :))

Larry, great photo! They're very shy unless they're curious. I know bowhunters who have lured them in by hiding in a ground blind and waving a white cloth on a stick or something. Their curiousity gets the better of them. Maybe you could experiment with that!

Thats not a bad idea. I might actually give that a go. Hopefully nobody will shoot an arrow my way. :)

Just don't wear your antelope decoy outfit! My husband has an elk decoy that's a lifesize photo of a cow elk's behind, on some sort of stiff material, and it fools the elk every time, until the wind changes and they get a whiff of him! The bulls just have to check out the cow's rear they can see, and in they come.

Oh Larry! He doesn't wear it! It's on a stake that you put in the ground, and you can hide behind it if you want to, or nearby!

Well that spoils all the fun. You cannot imagine the images that were floating around in my head when I read that originally. I kept wondering how he was going to feel if the elk managed to sneak up on him and caught him by surprise.

You know this makes me think I really am still high on pain medication.

Nahh, I think it may have been my fault for not explaining things too well! Hmm, that sure would be an interesting outfit...:)
