Incredible atmosphere created by those tones... for some reason I would like to see more of that silhouetted tree. 6/6. Regards,

It's a really nice photo--very nice tones. If you want nit-picky advice I'd say that the sky could have used a few more clouds (not that you can order them up, just a wish), the lens is tilted down or you're getting wide-angle lens distortion so that the trees on the edges are leaning in. That might be correctible in PS.

Thank you one and all for your time, your comments, and yes, your ratings too. I sincerely appreciate them all.

Matt I wished I could have shown more of the tree. It wasn't really feasible though. I was already at the 10mm end of my zoom and there was no more wide to be had. If I turned to the right I could have gotten the tree but at a price I didn't want to pay. I could not move physically because I was standing on two rocks IN the water. There was no place to go if I wanted to keep my feet dry.

Tom you are right. The trees do lean inward a bit because the camera wasn't level. It was close to level but close with a 10mm lens still gives you perspective distortion. I actually had it tilted slightly upwards, not downwards. A downward tilt will cause objects to lean the other way. That kind of distortion is the price of admission with a super wide angle. In any event I can and should correct it in Photoshop with the transform tools.

great online portfolio, this pic included. what did you do to give your sky here such a nice tonal gradation?

Thank you.

I didn't do anything special to cause the tonal gradations across the sky. It was a natural result of the equipment used and the shooting conditions. This was taken very early in the morning not long after the sun came up. Quite obviously it was very low on the horizon. To take the photo I used an EF-S 10-22mm lens at 10mm. Thats the equivalent field of view of a 16mm lens on a full frame body. By any measure that is super wide. Its been my experience that the effect you see in this photo is pretty common with super wide angle.

Hi Larry, what is going on with you? Any jobs yet, or plans for the future? I notice you're not posting much.

Hi Kim

I am currently a full time student at Colorado State University. At my age I don't know if it makes any sense or not but its much too late to back out now.

Going to school is enormously time consuming. It has kept me so busy, I haven't had a chance to devote much time to photography in ages.

Wow! I think that's wonderful! But you have so much experience and knowledge already, what are you studying now?

I am studying business administration. I am hoping to learn enough to open my own photography business and be successful at it. I have tried a couple of other business ventures in the past that were total busts. Before I go that route again I would like to know how to avoid the pitfalls. Thats the plan anyway.

Sounds like a good plan. I know from experience how important it is to know what you're doing on that end of it! That's wonderful that you're going to do that; you certainly have the photography part of it learned good enough:) I wish you great success.
