Annual Cicada

Kodak DX6490 camera set on close up setting and ISO 200. Subject of my focus was in the shade and with early morning backlighting. Then with paintshop pro 6, I cropped, added little saturation and contrast. This Cicada is also called a Dog day Cicada or locust.

That picture of the ciccada just above the exoskeleton is just amazing. I would see it in National Geographic. Love the documentary aspect of it, plus it's a flawless photo.

Goog work!

This must be a 7year locust... they stay undergroud for 7 years and then come out to breed. They dont come out every year, it all depends on when they bred and how long any particular species decides to emerge... there are several species all emerging in different time spans. The REALLY nasty looking ones are the 13 or 17 year locusts... these species are really amazing because they stay underground for 13 or 17 years and then emerge in synch. Youll definitly know when these things come out.. they will be EVERYWHERE in mass numbers and be much larger than the annual ones... Ive saw casings as large as 4 inches long the last time they came out. The insects themselves look basically the same except the eyes are blood red and the bodies are much darker... anyway, great photograph of an amazing insect!

Great capture. I was wondering where this was taken, as I remember seeing the skeletons slinging quite tightly to the bark of pine trees when I was growing up in Georgia, and sure enough! I've seen the skeletons, but never the bug. Wild "mask" on his face. Did you get any shots of him crawling out of his skin? I'm sure that was a sight as well.

Brian Hi again....I'll check my folders to see if I caught one emerging.

You can see a snap shot above through the comments. Which was taken after

it crawled out and also the exoskeleton. Thank you Brian.
