This was shot at the local county fair on a Nikon D1. I'm interested

in general observations about whether this photo grabs you or not.

I, and many who will admire this picture, would appreciate your sharing a few technical details with us, eg. camera and lens type, exposure etc.

After all, this site is about learning and sharing :0) THANKS JOSH -- somehow, it's hard to imagine this one in black and white

Maria,

This photo was made during this summer's Saline County Fair in Crete, Nebr., which is just outside of Lincoln. I shot it with a Nikon D1 digital camera and a Tokina 300 2.8 and cropped in tight. I almost always shoot in AE mode because the digital is so finiky about light. I had to adjust for color and I pulled the goat and her up in Photoshop and darkened the background down to balance the photo better. Too bad it ran in black and white in the paper!

This is a fabulous photograph. The sharpness and color is perfect. I like the tightness of the shot. I hope for shots like this when I take pictures, but never seem to get a good one like this. [but is the animal a goat or sheep? :) ]

Dynamic, composition, light, sharpness, the hand of the girl, the shoe, the horizontal flight AND THE WHOLE EXPRESSION IN THE FACE!

Clyde said it: "I hope for shots like this when I take pictures..." I think I would stay there and say - shit this would have been a great shot if I would have been prepared for it... still the camera in the hand... Also th DOF goes from the hand till the shoe - that can not be just "luck"...

One of the best images I ever saw!

I don't often rate a photo 10/10, but I have to agree with Axel, this is a perfect shot. You have definitely captured the "decisive moment". The entire photograph conveys action and motion - and a lot more successfully than a recent POW about a biking accident.

Congratulations!

Great! The shutter release was pushed on the right moment (the D1 did it with continuous mode, huh?) Good composition and perfect backlighting

The right place at the right time - with the right equipment. Good timing on your part and great composition in this hard to get image.

EXCELLENT!

This could win a photojournalism award...easily! Excellent and with the fast reaction needed you still framed it perfectly and caught such a great mid air expression of face and body right down to the shoelaces! Lighting - great you lucky person you... A clear 10...

Could this be a sheep, rather than a goat?

Muttin bustin = mutton busting?

Other than the title, superb.

And why is SHE a Cretan woman? From Crete in the Mediterranean? In Nebraska?

And, Joshua, how about naming the correct lens, Tokina 300/2.8 in the data sheet. You have the Nikkor zoom listed, but tell us in your answer it was the Tokina ... ??? What can we believe ?

Please forgive my incorrect items in the cutline and image info.

I haven't had time to look up the cutlines from the paper, so i had to write some simple ones until I can go back through the archives.

As for the lens issue, I don't own the 300, which is why I didn't put it on my equipment list until now.

Cheers,

Josh Wolfe

Most certainly deserving of POW; I'm surprised it hadn't gotten it earlier. A wonderful image - everything just came together, the moment, the girl's expression, the quality of light. I am curious, though, as to how "Mutton' Bustin" translates into Greek or the local dialect!

Well done. I love the backlighting of the girl and the framing of the picture is perfect. I love the dust that was kicked up by the sheep. Incredible shot. Well shot, well executed. Of course, perfect timing and perfect position was also key. Luck too.... :-) I'm jealous.

My congratulations and envy. As previous comments have said: perfect in every way. The light is particularly awesome. Inspiration to hopefully achieve something close to this good with my own rodeo shooting someday.

Excellent shot! It is not easy to get an action shot like this. Good for you! I can feel the girl now hitting the dirt and now she slides through the dust. Congratulations on POW. I have always liked this photo of yours from when I first saw it.

Well there certainly isn't any controversy here. For the subject matter concerned, I have no idea how this could be any better, just a marvelous, marvelous shot.

Joshua,

Great photo! I could actually hear the crowd cheering. I love her facial expression. Would you happen to have an after shot?

Clyde,

Why would you think it's a GOAT? I see no signs of GOAT in this sheep.

A person from Crete could be called a "Cretan" - but this is just about a homophone of "cretin" - not the same thing I hope.

Sorry, could not resist... It's a great photograph.

Get off Clyde's back, he was asking the question because Joshua had just in the comment above his stated that this was a goat. Make sure you understand what someone is commenting about before you ridicule them.

Beautiful shot. The dust and the flying shoelace and the expressions (the girl and the sheep) are terrific. The lighting and the fence set the scene wonderfully. The only thing I can think of would be perhaps a little more space in front of her to give us a better feel of where she is headed. I think that would boost the tension just a bit.

Congratulations, you were the right person in the right place at the right time. I could see it in a N.G. story about Nebraska.

That is my worry, the shot itself is fine, I'll decide the rating after I post but rest assured it will be high...I guess my concern is I hope the poor lass in this photo landed fairly unscathed, based on how she is holding herself as she falls off the sheep, it looks like she may have injured herself!

I've already made a comment pre - POW. As you know I was very impressed with this image. All I have to add is Congratulations... Your POW honor is well deserved.

Your timing on this picture is perfect! If you were a split second sooner or later it would detract from this photo. The look on the girl's face is priceless! Nice shooting and GO Huskers!
