The background is a little too bright which distracts the wiewer from the bird.If you could make the bird stand out from the bg it would be better.

Glen, I'd have to respectfully disagree. I like the way he blends with the background suggesting one of its defense mechanisms in such a brutal environment. It also somewhat celebrates its eye and bill.

The bill looks like it should be a fender on a 50's Chevy. It's the sheen...

Hi Nick, I looked at it before and my first impression remains. You got the bird sharp and clear, that he stands out in the impressionist background. I like to see birds in their surroundings, ready to fly again. Alix

This to me, Nick, is a unique bird photo. It appears almost like an impressionistic painting.

I'm wondering how he landed in the tree without impaling himself on those spines.

I like the way the bird and the background are much the same colours (except for that beak of course) Good bird portrait.

Very nice work, the overall feel of the shot reminds me of water colour painting. I think you would be happy to put this up on your wall. Best wishes. Pete

I also prefer this one, Nick, in spite (or perhaps precisely because) of the "distracting" bright background and the only just enough light falling on the bird. Perhaps not a textbook or "demonstration" shot, but would not one expect a newcomer to the field to produce some original results? I like the colour balance, the pattern of the background branches and leaves, and here also the DOF and sharpness, even though I still think the 160VC would have been a better option, as I said in the previous comment. Best, Ricardo.

Interesting bird shot in difficult conditions. The background is a little too bright but you managed to get him anyway. He is a magnificent subject.

For me, the first rule of photography is "is it interesting?". From a technical point of view you could probably tear this apart. But from the point of view of creating a window into Wonderland, it's a roaring success. Regards, Jack
