colin carron 58,916 Posted July 10, 2005 Leiston Abbey in Suffolk is typical of what is left of many of the medieval abbeys of England. Henry VIII sold them off to the highest bidder with the result that the houses remain but the rest has been demolished to be sold off and only ruins remain. This is a composite of two exposures (and the sky is genuine). All comments welcome! Link to comment
stupski 0 Posted July 10, 2005 Beautiful image. You did a nice job compositing the images. What a shame they let these go to ruin. Link to comment
atkphotoworks 0 Posted July 10, 2005 Colin, a lot of nice elements here. I like the expansive sky, in addition to the shapes formed by the decaying wall. I also like the diagonal shadows ccutting across the steps. Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted July 10, 2005 Thanks D.L. and Amar! The sky was amazing that day with the long streaks of cloud as you see. Link to comment
rkynast 1 Posted July 10, 2005 Very nice composition; that sky is very impressive. Very good work. Link to comment
j.b._junson 0 Posted July 10, 2005 Strong colours and bold composition, but what really makes this for me is the way the intricate graphical details fit together in the foreground. Link to comment
poutnik 1 Posted July 10, 2005 Colin, again a nice and rather promising invitation to step in and have a taste of your english country... Jiri Link to comment
ljk 0 Posted July 10, 2005 Every time I visit I become more impressed with your technical and creative abilities. I really love this one. The perspective and composition create a pleasing yet dynamic image. The sky is dramatic, and the exposure spot on... Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted July 10, 2005 Thanks Bartek, Richard,J.B. Sandeha, Jiri, Linda! Thanks you all for your kind comments. Sandeha, brick and flint are everywhere in East Anglia. Grimes Graves (the ancient flint workings) are just up the road. Linda, these days I usually let the camera work out the exposure so I have to give credit where it is due! Link to comment
paula grenside 0 Posted July 10, 2005 Colin, excellent composition. Did you shoot this from the top of the stairs? I love the impression as if we are descending to reach the lawn, and the sky too has a great angle. Really good. Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted July 11, 2005 Very nice, Colin. Perfect control of the lighting, with detail in the shadows and no blown out bright spots. Link to comment
cherlyn 1 Posted July 11, 2005 Very beautiful colours & composition. Esp love the sweeping sky. Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted July 11, 2005 Thanks Paula, Kim and Cherlyn! Paula, yes the steps lead up to a little viewing platform from which you can see most of the site. I stood there to take the shot. Link to comment
pjmeade 12 Posted July 11, 2005 Hello Colin, I know the lens even without looking in the details. This is a beautifully composed shot. I like the restricted pallet from sky, brick, flint and grass. I always try to imagine what these places were like before Henry VIII. Anyway, delightful work, best wishes. P Link to comment
alexandra rauh 0 Posted July 11, 2005 Colin,I like the way,You enter with the stairs towards the big terrain. The mix of remaining buildings and the ruins.the lower clouds to the left adds to the medieval impression. The rest of the sky generously takes over. You reached perfection with light ,color and exposure. Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted July 11, 2005 Thanks Peter, I must try leaving the wide lens at home some day and see what I can do with the others! Thanks Alix! I'm not sure about perfection! (;-)) Link to comment

alberto.conde 0 Posted July 11, 2005 Beautiful perspective, Colin. Sky goes very well with as framing of the ruins and houses. And that small piece of historical background is always appreciated. Link to comment
amalsircar 2 Posted July 11, 2005 Excelent image for composition, exposure,DOF,colours. The steps and gate leading to the Abbey appeals to me most. The cloud pattern makes an effect of organ music. Link to comment
