Birte, I am so envious!

I had a memorable eveing in the Yarra Valley a few years ago - at a work retreat. Two huge moths showed up - looks like one was an Emperor Moth - although I had no idea at the time. My shots were taken with a 10D and a 70-200 f4 L lens - nothing as good as your photo. Perhaps you could confirm the 'beastie' or otherwise?? - thanks, David

This is Fat Tuesday and it looks like this creature is getting ready for Mardi Gras. I thought at first it was a spider wearing a fern head dress. This is, of course, awesome. You only have one apartment? Sounds like you might need your own photography resort.

Good photo Birte, as usual ! We can see each details and the black background is perfect for a moth photo because they are nocturnal insects.

You know that this is a male ? The female have smaller antennas. With these big antennas, the males can locate a female at great distance. The female release pheromone in the air and only few molecule is required for the male to locate her.

Great photo again ! I have also a closeup of a moth head in the same family as your emperor moth, but from North America. I'll post it very soon, if you are interested to see it.

Now I know why he (or she) is Emperor!!! You'd have to have a lot of (moth) balls to kick him/her off the throne.

Birte, simply awesome! I would have kept the ends of the antenna in frame if possible. But excellent sharpness, contrast and color. Fine job.
