Ely Cathedral - the crossing

Composite of two shots. I had the wrong speed set so the original is quite noisy. This version is filtered through Neat Image noise reduction software.

Thanks Carsten! I like your idea and will definitely 'do a Mr Bean' next time I am there. In fact the guides are remarkably tolerant of photographers holding their cameras 30m above the heads of the people below. They just remind you to put your camera strap round your neck!

Excellent angle & perspective with vibrant colours. I can almost see myself leaning down from the railings.

Brilliant, specatcular, beautiful, breathtaking, I am at loss with more adjectives to show my admiration, dear Colin.

Ely was the cathedral I most admired when I was in the Uk learning your language some forty years back

Great great composition! This view point towards the ground gives paradoxically the better feeling of outburst toward the sky. A really great success!

Thanks to everyone for your generous comments. Alberto, as you say there is something very special about the place and as you can see it has a folder all to itself in my portfolio.

It is years since I visited Ely. Now a return is ordered. I have only just discovered this through the front page photographs. A remarkable composition. Well done.

Regards Ken.

Thanks everyone.

Ken, I was surprised with all the health and safety stuff flying around these days that they still give excellent guided tours of the towers, Octagon etc. If you go don't miss the tours as they are well worth the few quid.

... but come back to see it often. Think it is my favorite architectural picture on PN, for all the reasons that everyone has elucidated here. But for my part, you get the sense of what the builders were really up to in this shot, the "god's eye" view. We see it from below and get a sense of the majesty of the deity, but God sees it from above, and gets the message that we are sending ... the cross, submission, the gratitude, and the utter supplication. From an architectural point of view, we can feel how the pointed arches take the weight of the vault and channel it downward into the pillars and into the distant earth. Michal Skrzypczak introduced me to your architectural work and for this single shot alone I owe him a debt of gratitude. Sorry for gushing, but this is a great piece of work.
