I usually do not comment/rate photographs of this genre; primarily because it is not the type of photography that I do and, therefore, am ignorant of what it takes to create one like this.

This one struck me as I was traversing the Rate Recent queue. I like it! The children are enchanting, the dude in the middle reminds me of myself (at that age). The action and emotions are spontaneous and natural. One can not help but feel happy looking at this, and perhaps a bit envious for not being in the car too.

To answer your question, in my opinion the shadows need some detail. I am viewing this on a recently calibrated CRT monitor (gamma=2.2, 6500K). Ramping up the level a bit would not hurt this photograph, so long as you do it moderately and not destroy the overall mood. The background sky is blown out but is a non-issue. The building detail in that area should be preserved, however, so that the story makes sense. I like the floral frame embracing the riders. Nice detail in the flowers. It is a good photograph (6/6). Regards.

Thanks - this is a home scan, and I think I need to learn the art of scanning separately for shadow detail and merging the scans together. I've just spent some frustrating time not getting it right.

I've always found that kids photograph best when they are ignoring you, and that's the case with two of the three here. This was taken in evening in the old city of Montreal, and I wanted to get across the time of day and "historic" feel. I think I'm going to need to burn in the blown out exposure to really drive home evening time. This is another of my ultra-fast film shots, shot at 1600 using HP5. I may have pushed the film just a bit beyond where it was ready to go.

I like candid, unposed shots of kids, and this one has that geniune appeal value. Cute capture!

A very good moment, priceless expressions captured in difficult light conditions. I know very little about film photography and I am pretty sure you have done the best possible to manage the backlight. I probably would appreciate a little more light on those faces and maybe a little more less yellow but some more red in toning. Other than that fine and interesting work.

Good job, Sam!

Best,

Galina

Thanks for the comments; I've been trying to scan again to pull out detail in the shadows and lighten up their faces, but can't do so without losing the detail on the flowers and really blowing out the backlight. I haven't successfully merged two scans in layers, though I understand that can be done. I'll be having a print run with dodging at the bottom and burning in the back lighting.

Galina, I will play with the toning a bit as well; this is pretty close to the negative, but you may be right about the yellow and red.
