Very interesting. The only thing I would recommend is possibly using a little fill flash. Even on a digital camera this is advisable. For a serious close up, I would just add a little fill and some diffusion to the flash to keep it flat.

Ordinarily I would say no to fill flash, but there just no getting around those dark set eyes.

With fill, you might have to take the highlights out of the eyes, but that is quick fix in any photo editing program.
