Passing Storm II

I've redone this image as I wasn't satisfied with the color balance and the sharpness. I hope I got it right this time.

This was taken very early on in my morning journey into White Sands National Monument. This dramatic cloud cover was the remnant of a passing monsoon that blanketed this area with an unusual amount of water for this time of year. Early morning sun was breaking through the clouds highlighting random portions of the landscape. I was pleasantly surprised by this image with it's unique lighting and it has slowly grown on me as one of my favorites.

Jim, it is a nice composition. I like the textures here, I only wonder about the light, as the background sends looks like affected by the menacing sky and light ( a lighted and shadowed area) when the forground is very bright nearly overexposed, can you explain ? Thanks Pnina

The clouds were breaking apart as the air warmed. As a result beams of light were shining on the desert and moving randomly across the landscape. The lighting was random and changing by the second. I have several shots taken with in a minute each looking completely different.

Its all about light, contrast, and textures... Somehow I feel a bit uncomfortable with the color balance set for the sand. I think you could underline the interesting patterns in the sand using B&W. I tried a blue filtered B&W with hard contrast to show more of the textures.

I have to agree with Carsten, I think this image works much better with similar sky/sand tone and the sand texture looks better too.

I'll have to give it a shot in B&W as well. I do like the color version but I definitely see the merits of the monotone image. Thanks for taking the time coming up with and posting the alternate version Carsten.
