River Runs Through It

curtisforrester

While hiking down the Paria River, I composed this colorful and contrasty scene. We actually had to cross the cold river numerous times.

Hey Curtis, I love the shot, it's gorgeous, but is this a composite of two exposures? Something looks, well, like it couldn't be done with one shot? I dunno. I could be wrong. It looks so crisp and fine-edged with the high congrast lighting. I only ask because it says non-manipulated, which is no biggie. Either way, nice capture! Looks like a great adventure too!

Brian, to answer your question, this is a single exposure of the actual scene. This is full frame and nothing has been added or removed.

The balance of color is amazing! You have bright brilliant sky with some shadow in the canyon but there is no extreme from shadow to light, really amazing.

Hello Curtis, I don't think that I rated this one low?

It is a good image with a strong composition. The interface between the rock wall on the left and the sky looks a little suspect, making one consider that the sky as presented, may not be the sky of the original scene, but hey, what does that matter, the effect is rather stunning - if not a little distracting - (but this is only my taste). The yellows, oranges and blues work well together.

Brian seems to have a valid point.

Hello Curtis, I believe you!, it just looks a little odd.

The lighting conditions were such that there must have been a huge contrast in terms of exposure between the sun rich sky and the shadows of the canyon. It is therefore likely that you have had to do some dramatic dodging and burning to have both areas so well exposed. What you have achieved is a great image, but you have produced lighting effects which are dramatically different from what the eye/brain is acustomed to seeing in nature, this is perhaps why it "looks suspect".

Don't get me wrong - there is nothing dishonest, or bad about this, in fact it is one of the things which makes this one of your most interesting photographs (in my opinion at least).

Regards, Nick.

i love the colours in this; has the saturation been digitally enhanced? How DO you manage to get such crisp perfectly blue skies and such sharp interfaces between the skies and the mid-ground? I wish I knew how to do this!!!

I just visited your portfolio again...what happened to "Shining Through"? Are you deleting some photos for some reason? I miss it!
