Nice shot of a young fledgeling! I really must get my gear out and hunt for some little ones stretching their wings.

 

How upset were this youngster's folks that you were this close?

They stayed pretty close, but never attempted to attack me. I am sure my camera on a tripod looked pretty funny to them!

"Funny" would more likely have been interpreted as "intimidating" and threatening:)

 

I was delighting in a pair of red-bellied woodpeckers this weekend, watching as they taught their fledgling the ropes. No sooner had the young one flown around the yard a few times, when out of NOWHERE a hawk came in and took the young guy right in the air - leaving just a few feathers floating down for the parents to stare at. It was sad. I guess on the other hand, the baby hawks were fed Sunday morning...

Wow, I have to say that is the saddest thing I have ever heard! Too bad you didn't get that on film though-;) Would have made a good shot, Tragic but good!

There was absolutely no way anyone could have seen it coming. Even if I had the fastest camera body/lens combo available to mankind? The chances that I'd have gotten that were next to zero - those hawks are FAST.

 

It was like a National Lampoon movie..."Look honey, it's nature - so beautiful!"

How funny! In a sad sort of way. I happened to check out your portfolio, you have some beautiful photographs! Especially of birds! Makes me feel like a total amatuer! But you have inspired me. Thanks!

Great contrast and color balance here, maybe a little more air would give some intersting space, i think!
