Well David, it works! We learn all the time....good details and nice diagonal composition in which the bird is the " star". I like the points of light on the very end of its tail.... Pnina

Hey David you did a nice job of keeping the fill flash subtle. It's easy to over do it and have too much light on the branch. I like the use of negative space here. I'd be tempted to use PS to dodge the somewhat darker area of the blurred background. Your lighting experiment on the bird is a success.

Nothing to be ashame of, Is just a little flash... Ha,Ha! Well done It brings life to its's eyes that probably with the current light would have been difficult.

Ah yes, my young Jedi - well done. Keeping the flash at -1.0 and less just brings out a little more detail without over-exposing, and adds that little twinkle in the eye. Great for subjects in the shade and on cloudy days, and even less if they're in the filtered sun (if you need it at all, then). Too, keep in mind that the more away from the lens the flash is (say, on a bracket, mounted above the lens or to the side), the less liklihood of getting "red eye" in your subject (though you can fix that in Photoshop).

 

Next, we'll practice lightsaber techniques, and levitation.

Fret not - the flash doesn't harm the birds at all. If anything, the high-pitched noise of the recharge is what gets 'em confused.
