I was just talking about the golden mean and the rule of thirds the other day. The conversation was developing well, but stalled, as the image I'd used for an example, a portrait of Matisse taken by Cartier-Bresson, wasn't at all seen as "good" by the viewer.

I wonder how this particular image would be viewed by that individual I was speaking with. My argument would be that the immediate way a person is "drawn" or "attracted" to this image is not necessarily by subject, by its b&w presentation, or by its originality - but instead, that the evident presence of the golden mean/rule of thirds in the COMPOSITION makes this image compelling to the human eye.

On a website where brilliant color, flashy Photoshop techniques, and pretty faces typically draw the most high rates, this image is on the first page of the Top Rated Photos by 'rate recent sum' because people love it immediately - and maybe don't even know why.

I could go on about the things I like about this shot, but I'm already rambling:)

John, I'm not saying it "justifies" the photo - I'm just saying the well-balanced compostion really, really adds to it. It's a great shot no matter howyou slice it -!
