Trinidad Street Scene

arlo_midgett

Shortly after arriving in Trindad, I was stolling through the streets as sunset approached. I let my companions get ahead of me as I leaned my camera against a building to capture this street scene. I actually took two pictures here with slightly different twists of my polarizing filter. This one came out a little better, in my opinion...

This appears to be a well-composed shot but your exposure should be corrected. Shadows can add emphasis, but they're too much here.

Okay, what's the big deal? When people are going over my photo

albums, almost everyone invariably remarks that this is a "great

picture." Okay, yeah, I like it, too. But I'm curious: What makes

it good? The color? The composition? The content? None of those

seem to stand out on their own... Perhaps the sum of its parts is

greater than the whole.

Comments appreciated.

You were asking about the strongest points of the image? IMHO, the composition is nice, the color is nice, with a nice, dramatic sky and I like the people milling about, but the quality of the light is the strongest thing about this image.

The strengths in this picure are [1] the combination of architecture particularly [2] the tower and yellow facade which take centre stage and [3] light quality. In this regard I have to disagree with Tris. I do not find the shadows or darker areas bothersome. Neither for that matter is the scafolding unpleasant, but rather a colourful rust. It is just a pity that someone's head and shoulders crept in bottom right.

Well, Arlo.

Sometimes, I can over-analyze a shot. Keeping to simple reactions I had, here is what I thought from the very first glance.

I like it. The middle yellow grabbed me first, but after I thought about it, the far right building grabbed me and then the yellow directed me down the path.

Speaking of the path, the interesting turn kind of directs the viewer too, so it augments the focal point, by winding right around and leading the eye to the distance.

Palm tree on left kind of caught me, too.

I like that there are so many places to go. There is a great sense of depth. One's eye can follow the dirt path, climb the scaffolding, or jump down into the plaza, among other paths. The light quality is rich and the subjects are all interesting. The shadow in the lower right can easily be photoshopped out to make it even better. Also, I don't think the shadows are too much.
