This is a great picture! Is the dark left side and bright right side of blue sky the result of a polarizer?

When I first looked at the foreground I thought of the American West, but then looked at the cliffs and thought of the Dolimites. You were certainly blessed with a dramatic and clean sky. The top cloud and foreground give this some fantastic depth. The cliffs are so crisp you can almost reach out and touch them.

Nice landscape, quite sharp and beautiful colors.

I checked out the larger view at home on my good monitor. The resolution is excellent, with great details in the pines and on the mountain. The blue gradient of the sky really brings out the clouds. Another very nice capture.

My initial concerns were, is this too centered? The reason I believe it works just as is, is because of the way the foreground trees lay out. They seem to spread, or fan-out to the sides in such a way that allows this massive rock formation to remain as is right in the middle. Still, I would like to see this off-center as well just to compare. But in my mind it works just as is. Sort of reminds me of one of Bobby Douglas's big landscapes. A nice contrast of colors here. Great detail throughout.

Walt, this is as fine a picture of the Dolomites as I have ever seen. I think that, as the main subject, the monolith should be centered in this case--although I would be open to other treatments as well.

Walter, as the others have said, this is a very beautiful shot and the centered composition doesn't bother me. The qaulity of your MF image comes through here in the striking, sharp detail--I'm sure this will look terrific blown up to 16x20 or so. My only concern is with the uneven effects of the polarizer--while it doesn't spoil the shot, it is mildly distracting. Did you shoot this one sans polarizer, too? I've started to do that with when I shoot landscapes (some exposures with polarizer, some without), especially when I'm using wide angle lenses.

 

I really like the photo and am looking forward to seeing more from your trip.

I agree with you Bob about the sky. While it has a nice deep blue color, I would have prefered to have it uniform edge to edge. Doing a shot without the filter is a good idea. Thanks for the comment. Regards.
