karina_a 0 Posted May 14, 2005 Went for the grainy aged look - not sure if I carried it off, but I like the expressions on their faces. They were lovely, humble men with immense dignity. Thanks for taking the time. Comments & Ratings appreciated. Please comment if low rating so I can learn. Warm regards, Karina. Link to comment
derekwin 0 Posted May 14, 2005 The iso seems a little high. I like the expression and the composition. Link to comment
karina_a 0 Posted May 14, 2005 Thanks Ian & Derek for your comments! Nice to get some good feedback from a fellow Australian too Ian (I really like your portfolio - just had a peek). And you are right Derek - I shot this unecessarily at 1600 on my 300D, before I realised anything higher than 400 or 800 has too many artifacts. Doh! I added the grain in PS, but looking at it now I probably went a bit overboard. Will have to try again maybe with less grain. Might do that later & put it in my portfolio. Thanks for comments & ratings! Link to comment
atkphotoworks 0 Posted June 15, 2005 Doh! Lol. I have done that before where I have shot at 1600 unwittingly. Interestingly, I have taken to adding grain to some of my images. Just a phase probably, but I too sometimes go overboard with it. I like the image a lot Karina, partly for their expressions. I usually like images in the darker end, but it seems a little too much so, or at least on my monitor. I played around a bit and let me know what you think. Link to comment
karina_a 0 Posted June 15, 2005 Hi Amar, Thanks so much for taking the time to play with this. I agree it looks much better lighter, and I think you may have decreased the grain too? Anyway it looks much better. I must try redoing it myself less dark & less grainy. Did you use curves, or the brightness button? I am a sucker for grainy 3200 B&W film (used in the right context on the right kind of shot), so there I am shooting on my new digital in India & Europe for 2 months, using 1600 for low light, not realising it's not such a great idea on the 300D (perhaps I should have used my EOS 50 & at least known what I was dealing with, but you know - new toys); and then on top of that I add grain in PS (maybe too much caffeine that day : )) I am very new to PS as well, so still learning the basics - a steep learning curve. Just got a film scanner, so looking fwd to playing with PS and film as well. Will put some more shots up soon. This is also just a straight desaturation, as I have only just realised there are better ways to convert to B&W. Ah - so much to learn - hopefully I get back to places like this once I have learnt more. Thanks again for your nice comments & help, much appreciated! Link to comment
rune torga 0 Posted June 21, 2005 A very fine portrait of two lonely persons in a lonely desert. What are they thinking of? You have cauth the situation they live in in a very good way. Kindly regards Rune Torga Link to comment
karina_a 0 Posted June 23, 2005 Thanks for your lovely comments Rune. I wondered what was in their minds too. They live simple lives, but perhaps are happy for it. They certainly had immense dignity. Link to comment
Uhooru 2,207 Posted November 4, 2005 Karina very evocative of place. As one who has not been to this part of the world it makes feel like I'm there. I like that quality certain photographers get. Link to comment
