Luminous night clouds in August (take II)

timo_inkinen

Wide angle lens stopped down to F4, a 6 second exposure on a tripod. These clouds can be seen only when the sun is about 6-16 degrees below horizon and only at certain (45°-85°) latitudes of Earth. (This is another view from the same night clouds as presented here earlier.)

Lovely sky color gradation from deep blue to light pink !

White clouds lacing sky and dark black house standing horizon matches well.

A lovely photograph it is.

Beautiful colours. You seem to have got it just right. Such beauty around us as we sleep. Can you remember what time of the night it was when you made the exposure? Just curious.

The exposure time was around midnight about 0:30AM. Here in Finland it newer gets totally dark during summer (May to August) nights. At these latitudes the sun is so near below the horizon that it lights these upper clouds (at 80km high), but the background sky is still quite dark. In the large version of this photo you can see some faint stars in the upper left corner, which are part of the Big Dipper in Ursa Major.

The colors are as they were in the nature at photographing moment. My film scanner made some compromises to the image quality (in the original photo the light clouds had more contrast to the background as they have here in this scan). Part culprit to colors is the film used here (Agfachrome RS 50), which is quite neutral in its color rendition.

Excellent colouring and well researched. My only criticism / sugestion would be to crop out the portion of tree and the bush below on the left side which I think would simplify the image.

It's a great pic that would benefit from some cropping. I would personally have cropped the image to the left so the tree wouldn't have been on the photo. Otherwise, very nice, something you only can find here in Scandinavia:-)
