dk. 0 Posted April 25, 2005 Alvaro did you use your new lens for this picture? ;o) And how much of a crop is the picture? I find with birds the most important thing is shutter speed, not just because a lot of birds are very fast but because of camera shake too with the bigger lenses 300mm and on. So most times I leave the aperture at f4 etc (just make sure you focus near there eyes, and a perfect side shot helps too keep it all in focus with the lower f stop) and bump up the ISO to 400 and 800 on my camera (canon 20D) So I get a fast shutter speed. How are you doing by the way, Did you remember to get the wife some flowers! ;o) ;o) DK. (Update) I see what you said below. Does your lens have image stabilization? Like mine? If not that speed (1/20) fence and handheld is way to slow you need at least 1/300 for that lens even mine with IS is not very good below 1/60 etc. Without the faster speed it will not be sharp. (Update 2, After seeing your update to my update. lol) For the Shutter speed you used and the soft effect it is a great picture! The only thing is most people don't know that's what you wanted to get. They always want a very, very sharp and clear animal shot most times. Well Done Alvaro I could never hold my camera at that low a speed and get the picture this good! Take care m8 :o) p.s my squirrel loves you! :o) Link to comment
alvaro 0 Posted April 25, 2005 Shutter speed 1/20, no bean bag or tripode just a fence.ISO 400 my D70 gets really grainy above this ISO. Focused into the eyes, center metered F4 300mm ED new lenses... I think for these conditions the shake was minimum.I attach a funny crop of the previous shot so that you can see how bad the conditions were and still you can see the fish upset face. I see what you say above ;o) No David I wish I had image stabilization, They are extremely expensive. I though I took a risk and I am very please with the soft effect and the figure, but you are right is not sharp the shutter speed was far too low. You are also right you need "1/focal length" shutter speed to take a good picture. I was not going to hang it and I am gladly surprise with the general response. Thanks for you constructive critique and I saw your squirell is really welcme! congratulations. Link to comment
alvaro 0 Posted April 25, 2005 Crop of the previous shot in critique forum.I know what you mean David but if there is not enough fast shutter speed any shake including the bird mooving results in lost of sharpnes. Cheers M8! Link to comment

cszmurlo 0 Posted May 5, 2005 This is a terrific high art shot. The colors are perfect. The tree branches in the background are a simple and elegant complement to the main figure. The small bit of green leaf in the bottom left is an inspired detail. Link to comment
