First: I'm using "photo filtre" for make frames. It's a small but useful program. You can find it easly in the web.

 

And second: Background of this pic is a brown wood tray. You can see it at this pic: http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=3293042 But room was fairly dark in this pic. I used only a handlight.

The lighting is excellent. Colour is soothing. Composition is good. I think this is a visually strong image. Technically, this would have been a challenge in its self, and would have taken plenty of time in patience and decision making. There is something blue petruding within the frame on the right that doesnt match the checkered playing board which is only minor, but should be removed.

 

I think the glow of the foregrounded hourse is wonderful. It makes me think, you must have used a light on the right slightly on the front and back, and a strong light on the left and slightly behind to light both the front and back horse. Am I right? The reason I think this is because that orange light glow from the pink horse seems to be present slightly on the left of the blue horse. Was that intentional?

 

I would have loved to seen just a tad more of the reflections the horses made on the black and white checker board.

I have used only a light on the left. There was no light source on the right except a window obscured by curtains.

And the presence of reflection on the blue horse is intentional, of course.

Very interesting composition, I like carefully identical orientation of both knights and the color play on their bodies. Interesting effect with a chessboard disappearing into nothingness. As if this is the chess world, not just a board.

With the use of one light you have achieved an excellent outcome. I must have been confused with the strong glow on the right of the pink horse about you having more then one light source.
