Guest Guest Posted December 14, 2005 I like this more than most of the Portfolio, which is largely mundane bug/flower/picturesque, however beautiful. The portraits, however, are outstanding. And as someone above indicated, this dance photo hopefully points to Denis's future. This photo is initially striking, but is only a sketch. It'd be easy to re-stage the shot with dancers in the background. The concept deserves the effort. The image starts to be very strong, but it doesn't follow through...yet. It's the kind of image that deserves time and energy. Denis evidently does professional photography: I suspect he knows that this shot doesn't measure up to the rest of his portfolio in some respects, but is superior to most of it in other respects. photoriot 16 Posted December 15, 2005 Wonderful - from a distance it looks like propellor blades aloft in a shipyard - compliments to the owner of the feet as well! google image Link to comment
tonysvision 0 Posted December 15, 2005 Don't like it. Don't like photos of ballet dancers, ever since entering my first camera club photo competition and the judges chose a trite image of a dancer tying her shoes, totally ignoring my own genius. Well, ok - this one is kind of original, but I can't get over the feeling of peering from behind that bench the short dancer is sitting on. Link to comment
stephen hazelton 3 Posted December 15, 2005 The overall effect I find just sort of odd. It has a certain amount of Holga-ish appearance, but the details are incongruous with that. Specifically, minimal depth of field and high-shutter speed with low light doesn't match with what Holgas do. I think it really does need some motion blur in the feet, just to avoid the hanging-in-the-air look, which comes across as rather macabre to me. As is, it looks like a still life. Link to comment
giray 0 Posted December 15, 2005 The photo's greatest strength is the message it gives to all photographers. We are always hoping for the perfect shot in perfect light. We travel far, wait for hours on location, complain about the light, etc. Indeed, this image confirms my theory that perfect shots exist all around us. A hand opening a door, a piece of paper falling to the ground, the pouring of a pasta filled pot into a strainer. These shots are all around us but it takes an eye for opportunity to take them. For this reason I like this image. I have two daughters who take ballet and I know what I'm doing during their next lesson... Link to comment
geu4king 2 Posted December 15, 2005 Denis - This is a truely great photo. I have a problem (maybe ego!), I look at the ratings at this point and As this moment the Aesthetics: 6.15???? When I rate Asethetics, I say would I have this photo at 16x20 hanging on my mantel in the living room. I am sorry but my wife would have me "hanging" by rope unlike your subject. I guess I am too damn old, to say "what a beautiful photo". To sum this up, great photo... ego bruised! Cheers. Link to comment
tin_lung_ko 0 Posted December 16, 2005 Well, I am a beginner. Of course the motion is frozen(shutter speed, right?), but there is a lack of motion in the picture. I am not saying this is bad, since the picture does give us a new perspective about looking at things. What I am trying to say is that there are other possibilities. Is the picture a CSI lab photo? Suicide or murder? So I would say this picture is quite mysterious. Link to comment
mark skalinski 0 Posted December 17, 2005 Original composition, with traditional symbol - ballet shoes. Good photo. I would definitely rate 5/5. Not a story, since there is no story. No dramatism, poetry or expression of movement you would expect from ballet photo. Not a great estetics with messy background and floor. Link to comment
randalldouglas 0 Posted December 18, 2005 More flaws than the usual POW, or more points of interest? I'm not really sure, but for what it's worth I do find myself lingering over this image much longer than usual (mostly in a pleasant, inquisitive sort of way), and perhaps that is important to note as well. brooke_b 0 Posted December 19, 2005 My immediate response to seeing this photo was a whisper -- a quiet, audible, "Oh, wow!" I like the mysterious beauty of this shot, that's so delightfully captivating we viewers into wonderment. I love the black and white, and the hint of reflection on the floor. A stunning job! mervar 0 Posted December 19, 2005 Composition is working for me. Legs are cutted in proper height, so my eyes automatically drop down to the ground. I also like the back light. A little bit inconvenience for me is the format, bacause it is not actually a square. But in total, dinamic picture with good depth. I like this photo. Link to comment
