supreme timing but it is the light through the wing feathers and the texture of the pine that I think makes this a wonderfully composed and beautifully exposed shot.

This is really excellent.

 

I like the composition, with the wings filling the shot at this nice angle, the bird looking for a possible pray (ok, it might be just landing but clews are impressive) outside of the frame and the contrast in colours between the pine and the feathers.

 

As already remarked above, the sharpness of the tree provides a nice and real foreground and sets the scene for the action, while the light filtering through the feathers and drawing the border of the right wing gives lots of depth to the shot.

 

I have a few questions:

-Is this the original crop, in that you've followed the beast around its flight and got to the landing?

-How did you get the catchlight in the eye?

-Which shutter/aperture/focal lenght is this at?

Not sure what, but this looks off. I'd be willing to bet that there has been some serious manipulation of some kind here. The background looks artificial and it almost seems that the bird has been cut and pasted or something. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but my gut tells me that something is going on. Something makes me uncomfortable looking at this image.

I think this is magnificent! It is perhaps somewhat apparent that you took steps to highlight the subject and down play the background but, IMHO, this was done subtly and well. The composition is excellent and the detail is captivating!

Canon 70-200mmL F4 and a lot of luck!!!

 

Excellent. Feathers look spotlit, maybe a little bit too sharp around the outline. The composition itself is superb, the wings draw you in to the eye so there's no doubt where to look, it's the tail that looks most artficial to me - maybe a bit of feathering before selective sharpening will soften those sharp boundaries. I have that lens (70-200 f4L), but never as good a shot.
