jeff.grant 0 Posted April 9, 2005 I shot this and http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=3265909 within a minute of each other. Does either work? All comments are welcome, thanks. Link to comment
robvine 0 Posted April 9, 2005 This is the better shot by far. I think the other shot of this location is not close enough to the subject and leaves my eye wandering around the image looking for something else. This shot captivates you. 7/7 Link to comment
david robinson 0 Posted April 9, 2005 I can see why others prefer this one. There is an intimacy here with these stones that is quite remarkable. It almost seems as if they are gathering...Outstanding work Jeff. Link to comment
fotokrelles 0 Posted April 9, 2005 This works much better for me. Sand of the beach on the other one does not add to picture, rather distracts. Link to comment
larios 0 Posted April 10, 2005 Jeff, this is an excellent composition.... thanks for sharing... Link to comment
robertbrown 1 Posted April 10, 2005 I like this one quite a bit--it's a peaceful, meditative image with a nice color palette. My only suggestion is doing something with the bottom right corner: the two very yellow rocks pull me out of the frame. Overall, this should make a fine large print! Link to comment
jeff.grant 0 Posted April 10, 2005 Thanks for the feedback folks. Robert, those rocks bother me a little too. I suspect that they me be toned down a little soon. Link to comment
dougityb 0 Posted April 10, 2005 The reason I prefer this one is because the subject is more defined. There is no 50/50 split between the irregularity of the rocks and the regularity of the sea. Instead, we have a larger portion of scattered rocks, and a smaller portion of uninteresting sea. As a result, the sea plays a supporting role, rather than competing for the lead, and it therefore is able to be appreciated more for the little bits of detail present in the upper left corner. The viewer is not left to choose what he's supposed to see, but is clearly lead to the rocks. Once there, the rewards are manifold. This is a better shot in terms of composition, and subject treatment, in my opinion, and well worth repeated trips. Link to comment
jeff.grant 0 Posted April 11, 2005 Thanks Doug, more trips are definitely on the cards. Link to comment
Doug Keller 0 Posted April 14, 2005 Ahhh... another water beauty, Jeff. Thank you. Very nice. Especially the silver-gold elixir at the top-left. I'm not sure, though, if the yellowy hue elsewhere doesn't try too hard to steal the show. Still, a very lovely moment. Link to comment
mg 0 Posted July 22, 2005 This one and most of the other pictures I haven't commented on in this folder lack imo a great composition, or a leading line, and end up being kind of monotonous to me. Here I also feel that shadows are a bit unnatural - may need a better level and color adjustment...? Regards. Link to comment
jeff.grant 0 Posted July 26, 2005 Marc, what do you find unnatural? It looks OK to me but I am a lousy judge of my own stuff. I have a fascination for early sunlight on these rocks. When they are wet like this they just light up, as does the water. This is taken within minutes of sunrise. I agree that the composition isn't the strongest but these shots appeal to me. I can forgive them the composition for their colour and water movement. Link to comment
mg 0 Posted July 26, 2005 Not a bad shot for sure, even a fairly good one - don't get me wrong... what I meant is that the contrast is a bit low on my monitor, and the shadows not dark enough mostly. Lazy to do ameasurement job, but I suspect there's perhaps no blackpoint here: no big deal anyway. It might just need darker shadow levels. Regards. Link to comment
davidmccracken 2 Posted July 26, 2005 Jeff, What you have to understand is that Marc is a good photographer. However, he wants everyone to know it and if you don't play his game, your doomed! Sometimes the truth hurts. Link to comment
