Interesting to see the exposure date and the altitude of the peak here, Nick, indicating that these mountains are a lot wilder than our own mountains of comparable altitude in western North Carolina, which top out at 6684 feet--but never reach the tree line, although they get tons of snow. (One snowfall in May, 1992 left five feet of snow in one day on Mount Pisgah, due north of here, at an altitude of 5700 feet.)

Thanks Lannie.

2133m works out to about 6998 feet, but I suspect that the climate is much more temperate in Crete, and so close to the coast, compared to even coastal America.

The greeks call these the "White Mountains", I think because the retain their snow for most of the year. As you can see, there is some snow left even in May! These are the mountains which surround the famous Samaria Gorge, on the southern coast of Crete, in the Eastern Mediterranian. The Samaria River, which runs through the gorge is usually a slow, dry trickle, except in early summer when the eventual melt-waters transform it into a raging torrent. Its really worth a visit, but the 16mile trek through this remote gorge, can be a little taxing, but exceedingly rewarding.

Regards, Nick.

Great shot to have got here Nick. Sounds like quite a hike, bet it gets a little extreme in places. Cheers Nova

Thanks for the comment Scott.

I used a polorising filter, but the sky is otherwise natural, or as natural as Fuji Velvia ever can be!

Regards, Nick.
