I admire your willingness to post unmanipulated photographs. They possess a presence of the moment to them.

I like the way the composition encourages the eyes to travel immediately to the darker end wall of the Cistern, where impressionism takes over, only to return to the safety of the bightness of the first arch.

I like this photograph alot.

Best Regard,

Steve

Another beautiful capture. Very nicely composed. I think this too needs a little photoplasty to enhance the details in the shadows. I hope you will like the edited sepia version.

Kind regards.

Thanks for your kind comment Steve.

I love your surgery Zafar (again, I only wish that I had your photoshop skills), but the sepia toning means that we loose the unusual, but wonderful greeny blues which were a result of the reflected light, and 2000 years growth of algae on the stones. In addition to the historical quality, it was this blue colour that initially attracted me to this shot!

Fond regards, keep wielding your digital scalpel, as I am learning so much - Nick.

Nick, I was going to say you could adjust the cyan colour in PS but I see from your comment that is exactly the raison d'etre of the shot! I quite like Zafar's sepia version though I would keep the gloomy end more to retain the sense of mystery.

Nick as posted theres a heavy cast giving the cyan a saturated look. I balanced and tones are retained. Bottom end is too mucky posted...light on Zafars is better, so brightened yours...and needed a sharpen...well see if u like it.

Nice work, Nick. It's good that you don't fool with digital or flashes--film keeps you moving outside, and in unusual places like this.

Thanks Lannie.

Thanks Paul, I do like your version, it is certainly a "cleaner" image than mine, and it retains the lovely blue colours, but the murkyness is lost. These ancient Roman water storage tanks were dark and dank and dirty, and I wanted to portray something of this in the photograph.

Thanks for your version, as I am always keen to learn what can be done with "lightroom" manipulation.

Regards, Nick.

Now I got you. My initial impression was a color cast.... lol. Now I only increased the detail in the highlights and shadows. This adjustment not only increases the detail but also brings out rich colors which usually become dull due to this difference of exposure.

Kind regards.

Nick, don't listen to me,I am not an expert, but in this case, I like your version the best. Even it is a tourist shot, but that has that special thrill,to wonder about, how once it looked. Visiting Via apia once, i was hallucinated, beeing in the past, not knowing. and that not knowing , I like here. Alix.

Nicholas, this picture has the special mood of some of your 'Roman' photos, for which I have still not found the right descriptive word. The composition is simple and effective in conveying the feeling in question. I am only wondering about the strong blue cast. Presumably the light is sky-reflected, but even so ... Zafar version is a very interesting one, excellent 'lab' work demonstrating that there is a lot more information to exploit in the original than it may appear at first sight. However, I prefer the sense of 'mystery' the increasing darkness towards the end of the cistern gives.

I had much more interest in this photograph than I expected, so I will throw it open to a

wider audience to see what you think? - Regards, Nick.
