First attempt at a black and white shot. Also, I preferred this shot

cropped to this unusual ratio. Any thoughts appreciated,

particularly regarding the bits of twigs popping in to the right of

the frame. I rather liked them for some reason.

Mark hi, great composition, the perspective works really well for this photo. The tones are very good. You might consider a cropping a bit from the top. The twigs, yeah interesting.. they are a bit distracting I think. But great work anhyow. Thanks for sharing.

Dilber, I really appreciate your comment. I take your point on the sky though have tried a few crops with less of it in and can't quite find one I like. I'm sort of tempted to crop out the twigs but don't want to lose the background tree. Perhaps the dreaded clone tool is the answer. Thanks again for taking the time on this shot.

Thanks Richard. I'm not sure it's my thing either but it has sort of grown on me :)

For some reason the only twig that bothers me is the one at the very top. The horizon is slightly out of alignment, so if you go back to the original and rotate it just enough to get rid of the top twig then re-cropped to the same aspect that might do it.

Thanks Richard. I agree completely about that top twig. I was looking at this image yesterday wondering why I didn't mind the twigs and then focused on that top one too. It has to go!

I'm not sure the horizon line is off or not actually, the tree look straight and this graveyard is on a steepish hill. I'll go back and check. I guess the small rotation you mention wouldn't notice regardless so I think that's a very good idea.

Mark, I like it and especially the emptiness at the top fading all the way to white. It kind of ties the grave stone to the heavens, if you will. My opinion, the twigs don't really add that much. The image is strong without them.

 

Of course, you know what this picture needs to be perfect...

You are right, I know what I have to do to make this shot perfect :) If only I had the little guys with me but unfortunately, they were off on a shoot for the cover of a Dutch wildlife magazine at the time.

Original, unusual and beautiful. Only the flat white upper portion is a problem to my eye in this photo. I feel that portion needs a little bit of cropping.

Thank you very much for commenting Arup. I am glad you liked this shot. It seems lots of people would prefer a little less sky so I think I'll crop my version at home, down to about that top poking out twig.

By the way I had a look at your portfolio and it is very impressive.

Nice composition Mark. It could probably be cropped a bit at the top. T the branches sticking out from the right half way up the picture I find a bit distracting - maybe crop or clone them out? Otherwise a really good picture.

I really like this image, except for one thing. The branches on the very right side of the image. I find they are quite distracting to me.

 

I do enjoy the view though, and agree with you that this aspect ratio really works for this image.

Mark, I am very impressed by this image. Excellent work to have done a monotone conversion for the first time and to achieve this beautiful result. May I ask what conversion method you employed?

 

I also like the 'extreme' cropping you gave it as I feel it enhances the sense of depth from foreground to background.

 

Personally, the twigs do not bother me at all. However, if they were cloned out, the image would be fine too :)

lovely shot. I like the depth and contrast from the empty sky in the background. I have to agree, though, that it would be stronger without the "twigs" on the right. They tend to draw you back to the foreground, while the other elements of the photo draw your eye to the distant middle.

Thanks you very much for your kind comments. Unfortunately, I can't say how I achieved the the conversion because I really can't remember. I would say that given the mist, it was fairly close to black and white straight out of the camera.

This is becoming one of my favourite shots and it was a last desperate effort kind of thing. I'd been looking around for shots for a couple of hours and found nothing. Then, on my way home, I parked rather dangerously on a country road and quickly took this shot through a small gate. It is funny how that kind of thing often happens.

Tell me about it - many of my images are the result of 'last minute' captures etc. I start out planning to shoot one thing and end up shooting something totally different and with good results. Gotta love it! :) M

Mark, I like the diagonal line of graves leading you into the scene. I would have croped a small part from the upper white area which is good but too long an empty space.I agree about the twigs...well done. Pnina
