Honestly David I think this photo has tremendous drama and impact but the composition doesn't deliver. The eye meanders without a real focal point as the foreground takes you off the page. I think you have some great elements here but I'd like to take a few steps to the left . . . .

Offered in a humble spirit.

I would have given you a 7 rating instead of a 6 if it was just a tad lighter. Great photo!

David, I agree with you completely. I thought exactly what you said as I was shooting the photograph but was unlucky in finding a foreground dune that would do what I wanted it to do. Thanx for the honest critique. :)

David, I really think you're on to something with your values and tones. I'm looking forward to more cool stuff.

Suberb light, mood...amazing BW tones...I envy the conventional film for BW...

SHOULD this image have a point of interest for the eye to settle down, it would me a suberb suberb image...

I gave you all merit 7/7

Love the light and shadows and textures in the sand, wonderful tones, all in all a super capture!

the light and angles play in the dunes is always hard to capture. I have experienced that myself -- the perfect moment, with the perfect ligth, in the perfect spot is hard to come by. This is a great photo. I agree that some tonal adjustment might help lift the image to being truely striking.

David, IMO the image is nicely ballanced, it has 3 parts ( like layers..) the brighter forground is ballanced by the darker sands on the left and than the eye go's to the rays of light on the sky. textures are beautiful. Nicely seen and captured. Pnina

David,

Another phenomenal composition. Allow me to guess..Eureka Dunes or Mesquite Dunes. We were in death Valley in January. We stayed at Stovepipe Wells Villiage. Were you there?
