I am interested in how this photo compares with other taken using a telephoto lens rather

than a telescope, as well as your suggestions on how to improve astrophotos given such

equipment limitations.

The background should probably be made darker, now the noise floor is somewhat too visible. It's nice that the center of the nebula isn't too saturated, which seems to be the case on many other M42 photos. Composition could probably be improved by moving the nebula slightly off-center. But definitely not a bad try.

I think you did a great jog considering limited resources used for it. In the particular case I don't think digital is the solution, 12 x 30 sec exp. has to increase noise too much! Try film, but thanks for sharing it with us. Excelent!
