Mountain Reflection

kkwan

Shot at f/16 on tripod. The vertical orientation of this made the dark, polarizer corners less noticeable. Thus the contrast was lower, allowing for a better exposure and better colours. Uploaded: Oct 11, 2001. Levelled version uploaded Nov 15, 2001.

This was shot with a 24mm lens and a polarizer near sunset. Because of

the wide angle, the polarization is different in strength in different

parts of the sky. Someone has suggested that this is not a pleasing

effect. I'd like to hear what others think. Any comments or ratings

are much appreciated. Thanks.

I am not sure if I like the vertical orientation. The ski at the top and the babble on the bottom distract from the main subject.

I like both the polarization and the foreground rocks. They complete the mirror effect of the reflection. Nice shot.

I think it works! I like the rocks in the foreground... The polarizer effect could have been a little less, but its absence would not work.

I agree with you.

Just a little too much polarizer. I would back off until the right corner is about the same as the blue next to the hillside.

Nice water, love the hills. Nice picture.

Great composition and beautiful scene... the polarized filter does well for most of the frame, but one thing that bothers me is the way they make part of the sky too dark. Have you tried using a more saturated film and a strong UV filter instead of the polarized? Adjusting rotation of the polarized filter? Your image is wonderful, but it would be even better with a realistic looking sky.

I would have cropped the upper cloud out of the picture. It fixes your dark polarized sky, it skews the shoreline away from the center of the picture, and it draws more attention to the rocks and the reflection which I think are the best part of the picture.

Very well done overall, great photo!

At first I could only see the top half of the photo on my computer and didn't like the shot, but when I saw the whole thing I really loved it. I think that it really works well.

Hi Kenneth, Just marvelling at your photo's once again. They're superb. You really max out your 35mm EOS don't you.... ever thought of going Medium Format?

Anyway, I too have been given bad crit for over use of the polarizer with wide angle lenses. Personally, I feel that there are some who rate a photo as if they have a little check list to go through, instead of just enjoying the image for what it is. And in thic case, it's a beautiful image with almost too perfect clouds.....

Lastly, don't you think that the heavy polarization in the top right balances with the shadows on the rocks in the lower right? I do.
