liuyuan 0 Posted March 12, 2005 This is an American Indian lady. I saw her back first when she was walking very slowly with a stick in a southern Mexican town. I was then very much impressed by her stunning face which forms a huge contrast with her tiny body. I'd like to thank Rick Langer here for his detailed advice on the post processing. Link to comment
tim walker 0 Posted March 12, 2005 What a compelling image. There must be thousands of great stories behind that face. Very nice work. Link to comment

paulus 0 Posted March 12, 2005 it looks like the unsharp filter is a litle over used. Except for that a very strong image! Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted March 12, 2005 This one leaped off the page as just a thumbnail. Intense portrait. Nice colors and tones. Link to comment
Brian_Edwards 0 Posted March 12, 2005 I have to agree on the oversharpening. Unfortunately, there's alot of that going around, but in this instance, it's not nearly as severe an issue as I see in lots of other images. Link to comment
markiyer 0 Posted March 13, 2005 This is really a strong portrait.. very well done. 7/7 Link to comment

liuyuan 0 Posted March 13, 2005 Thank you all for stopping by. Your comments mean a lot to me. I'll have to think about the level of sharpnes although that was what I wanted. Jayme, doesn't the frame look a bit familiar to you? That's an inspiration from you :o) Link to comment
gcanyon 0 Posted March 13, 2005 Hi Liu, This really is a very powerful and beautiful image. Thank you very much for the PS credit. It is a real pleasure for me to have connected with you. Rick Link to comment
paulus 0 Posted March 14, 2005 I can understand that you want strong unsharp filter here. But in this case, the almost halo like, light around the sholders make you lose some of points... Link to comment
james_adrian 0 Posted March 14, 2005 I don't think you should worry so much about your low ratings. It happens to everyone. I get them too. I also rate photos fairly tough myself. I do that to everyone, it's nothing personal. I'm the one that gave you a 3/2 on this pic. I suppose I should have said why I did when I gave that rating. So I will do that now. Firstly, I don't find the image to be aestheticly pleasing at all. The image quality isn't the best. I don't like the filtered look of it. I also feel that the lighting and colours are a bit bland. Perhaps this image would work better as a B&W. Secondly, in terms of originality. It's really not original at all. That's not a bad thing though really. It's hard to have an original photos these days. So try not to see that as a bad thing. I give lots of people low ratings for originality even if I gave them a high rating for aesthetics. So again, nothing personal. I just rate people hard. Link to comment
Brian_Edwards 0 Posted March 14, 2005 Very little of what you see on photo.net (or anywhere else, for that matter) is original, and lots of very unoriginal images receive high ratings for originality. Just look at all of the bird shots we're inundated with. Well done, well executed, but boring, and not that original. My objections to this image are the sharpening, which I think is excessive, and the masking, as revealed by the bright halo around the subject. Link to comment
Brian_Edwards 0 Posted March 15, 2005 I sometimes feel that ratings detract from what photo.net should be all about, namely, sharing images, making comments, suggestions, etc., and that photo.net would be better off without a ratings system. Frankly, you have spent way too much time trying to analyze a couple of ratings which are outliers. Link to comment
james_adrian 0 Posted March 15, 2005 Yuan. Don't give up. You're not wasting your time here. I do like a lot of your other photos. I just wasn't fond of this one. I never said I was after any kind of originality. I'm still learning photography myself. Like i said. rating low on originality shouldn't be a bad thing. I know lots of people rate high on originality, i used to do that a too, but i'm trying to be more realistic with my ratings these days. Brian. I agree. I'd love to see ratings done away with completely. Just have comments and critiques. Link to comment
liuyuan 0 Posted June 22, 2005 The discussion continues elsewhere on the web. This photo was entered into the photo contest on www.betterphoto.com , another major photography website. It was submitted into the Monthly Theme category which was "Unforgettable Face" for April 2004. Unlike on PN, it's the judges instead of fellow members who make the decision. Link to comment
