I'm not going to rate this image. It's not something I'd frame on a wall. To me, the dirty ice reminds me of what s[olled sewage looks like in the Far North... Sorry to spoil the overwhelming appreciation

I do accept the words of Mr.Viladmir, the pic gives me such an uncomfortable feeling and very unpleasent feelings and as if every one in the earth is dead. so much dead feelings.

Wow! Stunning! Lithuania must be freezing in the winter. I thought Ohio was cold, hehe. Is this 35mm, medium format, or digital? I wish people would list what camera types they are using. I'm stilling using 35mm and medium format film. Everyone is switching to digital so fast.

After Stephane's post, I started to wonder what the actual colors could have been, at this place, at that time. How warm was the light ? What was the degree of warmth added by the warm filter. While trying to figure this one out in PS, this is the guess I could come up with - chances are that I was a little off, of course, hopefully not too much, and hopefully the photographer will be able to tell us.

What I'd like to know is also which color you all prefer. After doing this, I have to say, that I started seeing better the point of keeping this in color. But I thought that amending the colors was definately going to improve this picture - which is, besides the colors, totally fine imo. No crop needed, lighting is nice, subject matter is nice... Just looking for the most pleasant colors now - for my eye at least... What do you all think ?

Marc, I think Andy Warhol proved that an image can be altered in color and still remain the

same. All of your alterations are equal in that they dont change the essence of the image.

There isn't one better than the rest, but Vilnis preferred his for his reasons. Of all the

different versions one could make of this, maybe it would be interesting to just focus on

what the Artist wanted and try to understand why. We can all imagine our own

preferences and inspirations here. In a way thats what makes the image successful. We see

it from our own perspective. If I were there I probably would have seen it as an abstract

instead of a landscape (by removing the horizon line and trees, with a more overhead

vantage point). That would not be the same picture so it would be inappropriate to talk

about it in that way here, I think. Why did Vilnis make the decisions he made? Thats the

question , in my opinion.

CR, I think that is precisely the point, why did Vilinis choose this? The problem is that

there really is no clue here. If we look at the landscapes in his limited portfolio, they are

predominantly sunsets/sunrises or a night shot also with a warm bias. There truly isn't

enough here to get a complete read on his vision, but I really do not see this photo fitting

in to the body of work there in any meaningful way. The colors chosen here, based on the

portfolio, might be presumed to have been based on a predilection towards sunset/

sunrise light, but this one just misses the beauty of such light and leaves us with sick

chicken skin (I love that reference) ice. Maybe if there were more images that tormented

the landscape color and gave us a solid vision of such a thing, we could come to a

conclusion that this was intentionally created to off put us. Barring that, and seeing what

is in the portfolio, one has to feel that this was supposed to be a beautiful, serene

landscape, but ends up more like sewer water and a comment on man's carelessness with

the environment. A result I would be hard pressed to think was the intention here.

I may post a completely different color version later since it seems appropriate at this

point.

Mona, I see clues. Looking at his other work, he has a bent towards yellow ( not your favorite

color}. His world is warm and yellow. Does it work? Why not? Of all the versions, it does

create a reaction.

I don't really agree of taking winter shots under warm light. It would be much greater under natural light, if not, blue filter to bring out the real colour of the ice as much possible. Although is a good quality shot, taken at the right place (but not moment). Here is one of my versions.

"Those who look for beauty, find it."

This is a wonderful image. B&W mutes a lot of the detail, unfortunately.

Tho I prefer cooler tones myself, I can still appreciate your effort and vision regarding this photograph.

I wonder if you photographed any other images that focused more on the ice itself....??

Well done and thank you for sharing.

*cheers*

This is one of those shot that is refreshingly unique. The more time (and years) I spend on photo.net, the more I feel like I've seen it all. This is a good choice for POW because it gives us a chance to look at something different. This is what I want to see on POW. Uniqueness.

I think that to say this version has created a reaction and therefore it works is a bit of a

stretch. The reactions seem fairly well split between liking, disliking and wanting B/W as an

alternative.

Here is a post I thought kept some sense of the quaility of light that might be desired, of

course, I have no idea what will happen in the upload--also increased the contrast a bit to

get rid of the veil, which may have been generated by the original upload.

My mouth is still opened after seeing your photo on photo.net today :) This is one of the best "photo of the week".

Mona, I would agree that the B&W version works and preserve the threatening mood of the original and is more aesthetical than the original. Well done. For me the interesting question would be to know whether Vilnis finds his original intention of the photo also in this B&W version.

I like the dark blue one above. Not only did the scene probably look that way, I suspect it felt that way too, unless there was a dramatic rise in temperature after the freezing cycle.

And I agree with Rick regarding "originality" as a preference in POW selection and elsewhere in the gallery.

Great version, Mona ! It is, I think, somewhere between the way it looked and the way it would have looked without warm lighting, and ...much darker, therefore much more dramatic. Probably not the way it looked. "The way it felt", as Carl puts it.

It might perhaps seem a tad "over-dramatized" to some folks, but I like it personally, and I think it has now loads of additional impact and appeal, compared to the original POW.

No, No, No, Mona -- that blue depiction eliminates some of the nice cloud structure and changes or eliminates virga in the sky. Not real looking at all. Leave the wonderful color as it is. Unless, that is, you print in Black and White. The photograph works well in B&W too, but is best as originally colored.

To clarify for those that are wondering, my version is color not b/w. As for cloud detail, I was

just trying to show a different version and since I don't have the original to work on, or the

time, some things will necessarily get lost along the way.

Mona you are of course right. Your version is not B/W but it might be a good compromise between those of us that appreciated the Hobbit like mood of the original colour version and a wish for a more easily appreciate scene. Your version is even more threatening. I will end up going back to the "Lord of the Rings" if we continue like this!

Why is it that no one wants to accept the image for what it is. The alternatives only make the original seem better by comparison, I think.

Just an idea...bbw (blue - black and white). I don't know if it works for many ...it may be way off Vilnis'intention... it may make the photo less special...

I think we might need to add a difficulty rating to photo.net. Getting out onto this pier (assuming the photographer had to venture out onto it to get this shot) must have been treachurous at best. No way do I think I'd do it with out cramp-ons and traction apparatus.

This is a great capture of something you don't see every day. While I'd like to see how some other shots came out from this day, I think this shot is quite interesting and worthy of discussion. It's been quite enlightening reading all the comments regarding the colors of this shot and has already inspired a few photoshop ideas. It's not an all-time great, but it is good. I think the photographer did a great job here.
