Not sure how you captured the open shutter on the stars but not the water.

Nice composite, I like your star trails in this photo as it makes the pier more the center of focus. I don't think I would have taken a second look at it if it was one or the other. Thanks for the detail as I have been thinking of trying star trails and and would not have thought of two exposures to get such a unique capture.
