great stuff!! i really enjoy your composition and the colors are great. the shape of the foreground plant really lends itself to leading the eye into the shot. my only critique, maybe a bit more light on the hills would have been better??

I agree with Andrew. It looks like you used an ND grad, but positioned it a little too low. The hills look unnaturally dark, or the foreground unnaturally bright. Very nice composition, sharpness, and colors.

To those commenting on where the darkness in the hills, that's not necessarily the case. This shot was taken off of Henderson Canyon Rd just North of the town of Borrego Springs. It is on a valley floor some 15 miles West of a very significant ridge line with peaks above 5000'. This casts a very deep dark shadow across the whole valley. I didn't take the photo, but I've been there enough to know exactly where this is.

This shot, same place last year: http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=2216818

Here's a West looking view of the ridge: http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=2224030

PS I was right there yesterday, but the lighting was flat and overcast. Perfect for macro work, but terrible for landscapes.

thanks to all for the comments. regarding the darkness in the hills, yes, i did use an ND filter and line the transition up with the base of the hills. in these types of scenes, that is normally the only place i can find where the transition can be effectively hidden. i also boosted the foreground light a bit with levels in PS. christian, you are right, though. the hills are in a deep shadow, and i would not set the exposure any higher so as to risk losing red in the hill highlights or losing the deep blue of the sky.

it is in these situations that i most enjoy photography. when the light is tricky is when the photographers interpretation of the scene plays the biggest role.

Wonderful shot. I like that you have something in the foreground contrasted with the dull gray hard scrabble of the desert. Beautiful shot.
