Images of war always bring out the Viet Nam in me. The white shroud (body bag)

gives the images what I call heavenly relief to the dismal war stricken suroundings.

What can be more appropiate than old textured wood crosses, fog, mud and like a

weeping guardian angel (photographer) viewing the remains of another lost soul to

senselessness. Tour de force!

For several days now, since this Avril photograph was posted as the photo of the week, I have been haunted by its grey, its angles, and its message. I had not even wanted to read the critiques, so had been ignoring the opening page and skipping to the forums. My heart beats faster when I see it, and the only possible thing I could offer as criticism is.... well, nothing. Except this, cropping is a fantastic tool, to enhance what is worthy and discard what is not. In this case, however, your ORIGINAL photo was enough to impact my safe, happy little world in Oklahoma, and cropping it would not change that. But, I too am a fan of the original photo... what your eyes saw and what your heart was compelled to capture on film.

Dear Jean-Baptiste,

Thank you for this photo that communicates, without any doubts or reservations, the utter

despair of this situation, and inevitably, of other situations like it from the past.

Bravo for shooting it EXACTLY the way you intended! Others will either like it or they

won't, simple as that. What I find important is that the communication (message) of the

shot is always senior to the technical aspects of it. So while others may quibble over

INSIGNIFICANT points, you've got a GREAT SHOT here and no one can take that away from

you.

Sincerely,

Maria Di Liegro

jean-baptiste.

if you worried a bit less about silly/uninformative/cheerleader ratings* and considered the sort of constructive criticism i have offered, you could possibly end up with better technique and/or a properly tuned monitor.

*please note that virtually all of the ratings i made here were from several years ago and photonet has since changed the scales twice (as far as i know), rendering my "averages" rather meaningless. i can forgive your ignorance of this fact/history, but it still doesn't excuse your childish reply to my posting.

G'morning Vuk

I can understand comments without ant problems :) but after your critics I went on your

website and found no point from you telling me what you could perfectly adapt to yourself

:( This is what makes for me the difference between an interesting comment and an

average critic.

If things were different I would definitly think about increasing my abilities :)

wow, this is such a powerful image. From far to near the crosses helped to pull this shot together. Personally, maybe I'll place the white covered body in the clear not obstructed by the cross. Still a very good image, congrats !

This issue about the bit of cross over the body was often raised in this column.

I believed then, and now, that leaving the body entirely plain and white would have been

too linear and too far away physically from the surrounding. Then the choice was to

integrate a small bit of a cross, any cross, to create a sort of liaison.
