As for the technical details : I was experimenting with a new SB 800 af nikon speedlight. I used my camera's spot meter and reduced the fill flash output by -.7 ev. I seldom use a tripod because I find them very constraining . In this particular situation, I was able to lean against a railing for additional stablility. I was using a 70-300 mm nikkor ed lens and was about 8 feet away from my subject. The exposure was 1/160 sec @ f/9. I used levels in PS to adjust the brightness,contrast and saturation.

this butterfly really stands out nicely...excellent job without a tripod. I would eventually like to get a longer lens.
