Vienna : Schönbrunn Palace

They have the best Apple Strudel in town here, made fresh at the

palace, and served warm with a giant glop of Schlaggoobers and a big

blob of vanilla ice cream. Put that and a mug of hot Vienna Kaffee in

my hand and I'm set for the duration. I think I may have over

sharpened this photograph. What do you think?

Image is well executed and balanced. i have been there too and shoot something similar, i remember that lamps seems to be there just to create diagonals! And great strudel too!

Yes Walter is does seem a bit over-sharpened, though it is less evident when the image is viewed larger.

 

What a beautiful place to photograph, beautiful colours and a perfect sky for the shot. Nice composition, but maybe there's a little too much at the bottom.

Great image, saw your post I have been hit also but don't let it bother you. I must agree I think there is a little to much of nothing at the bottom of the photo, But is is a great shot.

I can't agree with the "too much nothing at the bottom" opinion. You cannot crop this much at all at the bottom or you will be too close to the largest lamp post. I like the depth this has because it has some space in the foreground and the large lamp is set back a bit. Cropping seems to be such a matter of personal taste that you won't ever be able to please everyone. To me, this is the perfect crop. I find it a very pleasing composition.

I do agree with kim! indeed there is a straight line that starts from the lower right corner and goes (passing trough lamps bottoms) to the crossing between the lower third and the left third. This is a very strong (but also quite usual) perspective view and it works very very well.

 

For those who havent' been there yet, schonbrunn has a 3 doors gate. Center's gate has a center perspective, is the larges, and was probably used to allow chariots inside; left and right gates are smaller and were probably used for people walking on foot: as crossing the left door this was the exact view people saw and i do believe it has been built with the exact purpose to express depth, grandeur and power!

Walter, I find the photograph very good. The line of lamps indeed draw the viewer into the picture. I like the combination of natural and artificial light. Personally, I would prefer the sky and foreground a bit darker though, to make Sch�nbrunn stand out more. How did you manage to keep people from entering the frame ? Best wishes. Peter

Thanks again Giuseppe for the visit. My location here is exactly as you pointed out, just inside the left pedestrian gate. The palace actually extends considerably farther than what I am showing; I would have needed my 45mm lens at the time but I left that at the hotel. This was, and certainly still is, an impressive sight. And one could kill for that great strudel!

Beautiful shot, Walter... Yes, you oversharpened a bit... but it doesn't bother me at all here, especially when I view in Larger image. This image has graphical feel... and I think your sharpening has enhanced that feel. I love the composition as it is...!!!

I find all these monster palaces are tricky to shoot (as are all very large buildings) and tend to be a challenge for composition. In cathedrals the towers help a lot with the vertical emphasis which you have added here with the lamppost.

I love the sense of openness that you've brought into this shot ... the square in front of the palace looks vast! I also love all of the lamp posts scattered throughout ... the perspective that has them appear different "sizes". Very good!

brilliantly charming. the vibrancy of the building and the lights compared to the duller snow and sky evokes a lovely sunset time of day, and the foreground -background composition is terrific.

Lovely and impressive shot , Walter. I especially like your capture of the colour, which is actually known as Schoenbrunn Yellow and is found on many buildings throughout Austria. Now , regarding that apple strudel. I claim to be able to better the one you had anytime ! You got the commercial version. I'll make it as my Viennese mother (who will be 98 this year and doesn't bake anymore) taught me , namely home made ! Unfortunately, to taste it, you'd have to come Down Under ! :))

I missed this image during previous visits. Wonderful composition of an architectural marvel. It is not easy to capture the essence of this building in a photo but you have done it with this one. I use the unsharp mask a lot and think you used this tool very effectively for this image.Thanks for the comments and encouragement on my interview with Josh. GJ

Thanks Jim, thanks for the visit! I removed the original larger edition of this and most of my other photographs because of problems involving internet ripping. I have just low resolution images posted now for the most part. On the original of this I think you would have agreed with me that it may have been over sharpened a bit. Regards.
